Hi Guys,

I have a quick question for you all.

I was wondering if you were to have the barrels ported on a double rifle, would it affect the grouping? Now, here's what I'm getting at: If I understand things right....If you are shooting a double that is regulated with a certain load and you shoot a heavier bullet in it, then your "barrel time" will be longer, your recoil may even be stronger, and your bullet placement will be higher.....is this right?

If so, and you had the rifle "ported", would the porting affect the rise of the barrels? If porting did affect the rise of the barrels, in theory, you should be able to shoot a heavier bullet, with a little heavier recoil.

OK, I'm interested in your thoughts on this issue, so please weigh in on this.

There's no way back from a port job on a double rifle.
At thousands to tens of thousands of dollars for a re-barrel job on a double rifle -- it's just not like screwing a new barrel on a bolt gun if you don't get it right.

If you want to re-regulate a double rifle for some load which is not the load it's set up for currently, have it re-regulated.
The cost isn't much, and doing so won't wreck the value of your double rifle. Porting a double rifle will definitely have a detrimental effect on it's resale value.

I think that is a very good idea!

Porting a double rifle will not only modify the upward movement of the barrels in recoil, but will effect the side motion as well.

The double rifle depends,on the recoil "FLIP" of each barrel to move away from the other barrel, and upward at an angle to regulate.

The sight is alligned on the aiming point on the target, but the RIGHT barrel is pointing to a place that is LOW, and on the LEFT of the aiming point, while the LEFT barrel is pointing to a place on the traget that is LOW, and on the RIGHT (lines of sight through the bore crossing).

When the trigger is pulled on the right barrel of a porperly regulated double rifle, useing the proper load, the the recoil causes the barrel to not only move UPWARDS, but to the SIDE as well, so that it is pointing to the place where the sights were when the trigger was pulled by the time the bullet exits the muzzle of that barrel.

This is a very comlex set of movements needed to shoot to the regulation built into the rifle. When simply mounting a scope on a double rifle improperly, or useing the wrong load can absolutely destroy the regulation, IMO, porting a double rifle would be just too risky! However, Justice, it is your rifle, so I'm in no way telling you what to do, but simply making you aware of the pitfalls of such an action! I would say the minimum for a new set of barrels would be $10,000 USD and upwards of that in most cases!

Yuck. Blasphemy!! I have seen a double with magnaported barrels, sold for 50% less than an unmolested double.

On e of the members on here owns a Ported 450NE.

I saw and hot it over Xmas.

Interesting to say the least !!!


Personally, I can't see why it was ported, one cut in each barrel.

Port form and layout looks to be Mag-Na-Port on this one; two ports a side.

But yeah, the reaction to it having been done was certainly unanimous.

Yes, that's it. I didn't want to name the current owner but since he posted it, so be it.

Just shows how much notice I took of it !!!

For Pato or anyone, it's a nice double for hunting, no doubt about that. I have one very similar but with Rigby on the side.

If recoil was a problem, I wish the person who did it had down loaded it instead of porting it.
