50 Caliber 8 Inch Twist
      #174138 - 26/01/11 08:38 AM

Was checking the barrel racks yesterday, one of the 50 caliber barrels I have is 8 inch twist.

New barrel blank, 1.5 Inches O.D. Big enough to mill integral rib, recoil lug, swivel lug and sight ramp.

Pondering what to do with it. Maybe a 500J shooting long monometal??

Comments welcome.

There's a fellow big bore shooter here that built his 500 Nitro 3" on a Ruger #1 with a fast twist 50 BMG barrel.
He was shooting 750 grain A-Max's off the bench into less than an inch at 100 yards. He actually shot his Silver Benchrest medal with it! (5 shots under an inch at 100 yards.)

He reckons he was only good for 2 groups per day, the nerves started to wander after that.

I built a 500NE 3 1/4 on a New England (HR) with a 1 in 14 50BMG barrel & it will not stabilize 750Gr's , I dont think I can drive them fast enought AND stay alive LoL

570Gr's are a 1 shot head ache , I now use a 535Gr a 2200fps or so , more like a hot 500BPE or 50/140 , I might use it here in Tassie at the big bore shoot ?

After a couple of other projects are complete I am thinking of chambering this barrel for one of the 50's and shoot some heavy solid bronze or copper bullets, just to see how they work out.

If one follows the double A line of thinking, faster twist gives us more bullet RPM and a tendency to retain straight line penetration. Maybe so, maybe not.
