Big Bore Rugers, January 2011
      #174097 - 25/01/11 09:00 PM

I see on the Ruger site that the No.1 Tropical is being offered in .458 Lott.

Also, I can't seem to find the big bolt actions at all. I wonder if they will reappear with new editions to the line-up?

No, Jeff, it's the Mk.2 Magnums that I'm wondering about: the .375 H. & H. Magnum, the .416 Rigby and the .458 Lott.

According to people who attended the SHOT Show, the RSM has been discontinued. Really it's a wonder they lasted so long after the Express was discontinued.

John the reason I bought the CZ 416 Rigby was the price. The RSM I handled felt better in the hand than the CZ and the RSM has the 3 position safety but when it is $700 to $800 dearer than the CZ it was no contest.

Bit late picking this up, but as a lefty it has always pissed me off that Ruger never made their RSM magnums in left hand action. I see that CZ have released their big magnums in left hand action now...at just over $3000AUD..whereas the right hand models are around the $1600 mark!!! Why the huge price difference between left & right hand?

I noticed in the latest "Rifle" magazine that Ruger are also doing runs of #1's in the following.

30-30 WCF
35 Whelen
6.5 x 55 Swede
257 Roberts.

If you had gone to Holy Trinity Elementary School like I did, the Sisters of Mercy would have cured you being left handed like they did me ...

Yeh, they have been available in 303 British for a while now, along with 300 H&H as well.

Interestingly, in the above list of the 4 new calibres, they have no new short wonder magnums, all of them are older classic cartridges that just get the job done.

Add me to the left handers club as well.

I had a few things done to my CZ .416 by American Hunting Rifles. Among them was the fitting of a Win M70-style 3 position wing safety.

It's still available. Here's a link:

http://www.hunting-rifles.com/Accessories/accessories.htm

Pricey at $225 US, but I like all my hunting rifles to have the same safety system. Even the Remington 721 I inherited from the man who taught me to hunt now wears a M70-style safety.

I believe there are other sources. You may find some bargains if you really desire a 3 position safety.

I have one Ruger bolt rifle, one of the early Mark II's with CRF and the 3 position safety. I like the rifle a lot. It's hard to believe, but next year will be the 20th year I've had it in my possession. But I prefer the M70 safety to the Ruger safety. The safety tab on the Ruger is smaller & tucks in close to the bolt when on full safe. I find it less ergonomic than Winchester's.

My oldest son's a lefty like I was, he's in the 3rd Ranger Battalion now, when he was in basic he asked if they had any left handed M4s. The drill sargeant replied drily "Sure do, they look just like the right handed ones"

How so? If its accuracy ... the 1A has always been the most tempermental.

Personally ... having just bought an older 1B ... I can't believe they dropped that model and kept the stupid short barrelled 1S rifles. The older rifle is also a world apart in finish and smoothness compared to my new 1H.

In the No1 rifles currently ... there is SFA to lust after unfortunately.
Cheers...

Con.
I am talking about accuracy. I haven't seen or heard a good report on the new .303's yet and if there are some they are few and far between.

You are right about the older #1's. I saw 450Ackly's #1 in 219DW put 10 shots at 100 yards into just over 1" on a windy day while fire forming loads.

I think the newer #1's fool the same trait/pattern concerning accuracy as they always have. Some shoot right out of the box - seems most .375H&H's do along with .280 Rem's. Some don't shoot out of the box, but respond to some minor tinkering. Some don't respond until one gets involved with total re-bedding, installation of an 8x32 hanger tension screw, shortening of the 1/4 rib, slotting the 1/4 rib screw holes, etc and some don't respond no matter what is done.
Perhaps more shot today than old, 1970's era guns, perhaps not - but the wood on those was certainly wonderful in comparrison to todays rifles.

A #1S in 26" in 7x57 would have been a wonderful addition to a collection of shooting rifles.

My #1A in 7x57 with stubby 22" bl. continues to shoot 1/2" with 140gr. Noslers at 2,940fps mv - no accuracy work done, right out of the box. My #1B in .218Bee continues to shoot 1/2" to 3/4"(100m) - after over 7,000 rounds of 40gr. Ballistic Tips & VMAXS at 3,650fps. YES the numbers are true.

Yeah - I know, not big bore - but shooters both.

I do think the larger bores usually shoot well - more often than smaller bores.

My late friend Richard Lester won the Burns' Lake 1,000 yard benchrest comeptition one year with a Ruger #1 in .300 H&H, shooting 168gr. Sierra MK's. His group was 1.5". Yes - it was a lucky group - some planets were aligned for him that day, but it was still a good shooting #1 or he wouldn't have used it in the first place.

I don't know what No.1s used-to be like. I'm a relative newcomer to all this. But, I do know that I like my No.1 (.450/.400 3" NE). It is the only one I've ever laid eyes or hands on, actually, and has served me very well. I think it represents excellent value, and is almost one of the cheapest >.400s money can buy. Naturally, I have a few gunsmithing plans for it, but all things considered, I'm most happy with it.

Ben

The quality of the "older" No 1's was really good. Such as a good lock up etc.

I have seen a couple of newer one's and from what people
have said, a lot more movement, less quality.
