SE Asian Deer Species and other trophies
      #174082 - 25/01/11 06:18 PM

I visited Viet Nam in December and was pleased to see some hunting trophies hanging on the walls in various buildings.

Here is a selection.

One species was new to me.

Elds deer. A species related to the Indian Barasingha.

A selection on a wall in a courtyard of the old Presidential Palace in Saigon.

Spotted or Chital deer. But some think it is a sambar? What do you think?

Gaur trophy.

This one is certainly a sambar.

A couple of gaur or banteng. Both species were wild in IndoChina ...

IndoChina also had wild elephant in the past.

Some elephant feet trophies ...

Tusks used as part of the Presidential throne, in the President's audience chamber.

Very interesting, John. I have Etienne Ogerri's book, "I Killed for a Living", and whilst I must disagree with some conclusions he drew about hunters and hunting in other lands, and some of his means and manners and judgements of hunting, I enjoyed the stories.

Thanks for the great photos John , did you get any leads on hunting while you were there ?

I hear it is open a little ?

On those heads , I would say the the Spotted Deer is a Sambar type Deer & all the Bovine skulls are Gaur , 2 Bulls & a Cow I think , Gaur/Seladang have a domed skull , Banteng are different on the heap I have seen .

These are good pics ,Rono sent me much the same when he was there also..it must be the 1 stop for tourists eh!

I think that is an Axis JH if that is a tail underneath though the antler config suggests sambar. A quick measure or comparo of the two skulls would tell you.

antlers suggest sambar.

shoddy taxidermy job on the cats.

i see the way of presenting trophies is so different in 'nam.

Different to americas, Britain, mainland europe, africa and the subcontinent.
