For doing all you anticipate, a .500 NE will do the job as safely and as efficiently as possible. A .577 or .600 would be simply too much weight to lug around for such overall work, though they would certainly do the job at hand. 9.3/.375/.400 too light for such use, and over time, may lead to serious problems for shooter, if not backed up by something heavier. .450 class would do the job well, only .500 will do it much better, especially in event of a close encounter of the first kind.

The .470 has stood the test of time as the most prevalent rimmed DG cartridge for a reason. In a DR it offers the best combination of rifle weight/recoil/stopping power/penetration. The standard by which all the others are judged.

No one has ever really needed to tinker with the conventional load: the 500 gr bullet at 2150 FPS. Good factory ammunition is readily available.

Anything bigger is overkill. You will shoot better if not fatigued from carrying a heavier howitzer all day, and shot placement is far more important than a marginal increase in caliber. Additionally, your second shot (if necessary) will be a bit better/quicker if you have not been punished by the recoil of your first.

You can go a little smaller/lighter (back to the various venerable .450's), but why bother when you can use what superceded them, making the best, low pressure use of the earlier .500's case?

As Craig Boddington has written it is a .470NE world, and that is a very good world to live in...

Fine, use something a little different, but you won't find anything better.

The .500NE is my choice. It's known for its punch, fun to shoot, and just a marvelous round. Also, I happen to own one!

The most dangerous game I've taken with mine was a white-tail deer. I'll never have money to hunt the Africa big five, but I still can hunt with my .500NE.

Cpt, you just need to sell a double or two and go. I sold my 500/450 to fund my elephant hunt this spring. Do I miss the Royal?, yes but when I look at my 60lbs tusks and watch the DVD I smile!

470Evans,

I know. It's always a battle between that which can be held in the hand and that which resides in memory. For me, the memories are far too expensive. I have scratched together a few double rifles along the way, with my share of mistakes, but in the end I can sell the DR's and have something back. I can't sell the memories.

Believe me, I know what I'm talking about. I've been to Africa on a 21 day safari. Problem was, I was a non-hunting observer. But in the end, I think I had as much fun as the hunters I went with. I could have made any of the shots they made.

It's a rich man's sport. I'm not a rich man. One day I will cash in my chips. I can sell a double rifle. I can't sell a memory. Sad but true.

Curl,

I hear you, but as I've gotten older there are things that have become more important than possessions and $$$. When you are in the retirement home and the guns and $$$ are gone you'll think often of that tusker or Cape Buffalo that fell to your Gibbs 450 and smile. If there was ever a gun that was built for it that's the one, beautiful rifle.

If you want to go on a hunt like that I hope you are able one day.

I voted for the 500 NE. For me, it's the optimal classic with an unimpeachable reputation for it's stopping and killing power combined with the right packaging. It works well in a smokeless world with no need for fillers, the only change I would make it to give it a thicker rim. That said, I never hunted mine before I sold it; I do plan on getting another but it will probably be a single shot. Most importantly, I could shoot it.

What about a 7 dram or better bore rifle or BPE? That would get my vote.

If I was a client, I would have gone for the .450/ .400, but doing what I do, I chose the .500 NE. I would love a .577 or .600, but 2 things work against it, I like to carry the gun myself, and I believe 99% of people cannot shoot the second shot fast at all, due to recoil.

The practical side of me votes the 470. But for performance on Ele in the thick stuff, I would give the 500NE the edge.

My dream bigbore Dr rifle is a 10 or 8bore hammerless, backaction with Jones underlever.
1000-1300grain bullets @ +1600Ft/sec.
I too would vote on a borerifle loaded up with a handfull of black powder.

After gotten use to using the Jones underlever either on my 12bore Rigby or 10bore Manton, I find the toplever rather puny. last time I was shooting a SXS with toplever, I quit a few times found myself reaching for an underlever that wasn`t where...hahaha.

I also like the big bore gauge rifles. 8 or 10 drams or smokeless equivalent and you are back in the true golden age of Africa. Though, like Curl, I may be biased as I own a few!

577 bpe for weight, with new mono metal FP bullets for penetration.

12 or 10 bore with bullet travelling at 2000 fps, again with FP mono metal bullets for effect.

merry christmas to you all

I have a 577NE and a 600NE , in both cases a opportunity and a pure hazard ! IMHO a 470NE is more versatile and a better choice for all big game , not too heavy , easy to reload for fair prices and no problem to get factory ammunition .

My customers that have used the 577 or 600 on game swear by them. If you can carry 11lb, you should be able to carry 13lb/14lb.

No question one can carry the extra weight, but if spending a lot of time walking at the ready, the lighter gun is much easier and faster to handle.

By the way, a very Merry Christmas and all the best in the New Year to all forum members!

My .450 weighs 13 1/4 lbs and while heavy I can carry it quite fine.

375 Flanged or 400 class for me. Light recoil, easy to carry and versatile - can be used elsewhere.

My vote would be the 500 Nitro as well--have been lucky enough to shoot most of the calibers mentioned..find the 500 very managable in recoil and easy to carry in the field..

I picked 470 but closely followed by the 450NE.
I want my working Double to weigh between 10 and 10.5lbs.
