BSA made *all* the Lee Speeds?
      #160475 - 15/05/10 05:06 AM

It seems to be commonly assumed that all or most of the Lee Speed type sporters were made by BSA? Obviously LSA (London Small Arms) also made some, but most are marked BSA & Co. etc.

I'm just wondering if we are all on the same page as to the other smaller gunmakers who sold BSA-made rifles and the extent to which these rifles were built or finished by those other gunmakers?

My own belief would be that BSA provided barreled actions, perhaps with a range of sights etc. that could be chosen from, and that the gunmakers did the stock-making, engraving, finishing etc. themselves.

I suppose BSA might have also provided finished or sem-finished actions alone, but probably they would have wanted to do the the barreling to ensure the quality and shooting of what went on their actions.

Would anyone care to comment?

BSA being a commercial company in a time when the restrictions and legislation concerning firearms were minimal would have sold what ever to who ever as long as it was legal for them to do so . I would say the rifles were made to whatever price points the trade would pay and sold on . This would mean anything from an action to a fully finished rifle with whatever embellishments the trade or the end user wanted.

for more info on London Small Arms, check out the brochure for 22 r/f rifles at www.rifleman.org.uk/WOPMR_LSA_brochure.htm. The factory address in Old Ford in East London is near the canal and barely a mile from the modern Canary Wharf, home of the new financial district of London.

the old London Armoury buildings are just a few yards from my elder son's apartment, so I plan on making a visit to photograph what is left and will post the photos here, probably after Christmas now. BTW we are still under snow here in South England!

Mine was made (retailed?) by Westley Richards, I knew little about them until I read this forum, believing that W-R took a long Lee Enfield and modified it themselves

AFAIR I checked the action workings with the cutaways in the Royal Armouries when they were in the Tower of London? in the 1970's as the long and SMLE actions were slightly different, although I cannot remember what it was.

I will try to post some pics over the holiday for comments

Can you share some photos or info about your Westley Richards rifle? We can probably date it for you and offer other information. Also, every bit of data on any Lee Speed is a contribution to my project for building a reliable method of dating them.

Thanks!
