I just bought this gun here....way too cheap. Just look at the carvings close to the recoilpad.
Price is aprox US$ 678...

I think the carvings alone would cost 1500 US$ ..but again..they can not be made for $678 for sure..:LOL

28" barrel...these long barrels does seem a little sexy..

The (early model) Nickel scope alone is worth far more than that! (I have a 6x 42)
BTW do you know the story of how Nickel came about?

I do not know the story..Would like to hear:LOL.

I do not know why nobody was bidding more on this gun...I think this one will be a keeper.

I was told that in the last days of the war in Germany there were two options for the western allies to secure German technical and scientific knowledge; that is equipment or personnel.

The Russians went for the equipment at Zeiss Jena, The Allies apparently dropped in a team to secure design/ technical staff. One of these was a Herr Nickel (a senior scientist).

By about 1953 he was able to set up a private businees manufacturing optical instruments and progressed to scope sights. I believe that H&H marketed these as an option until abt 1965 and perhaps later but the models abt 1980 passed to using alloy for the tubes. As of 2009 they were still in business but may have been absorbed by a larger organisation.

I'm sure our mate Kuduae has the definitive tale on thir history.

Very very nice! A Brenneke in his 9.3X64 has been on the top of my list of bolt guns to acquire for quite a while. The price that you paid for it is quite low, does everything check out OK? If so you have a real treasure at a very good price.

I have an 'Australian Outdoors' magazine from 1966 (somewhere) with a review of Nickel scopes by Colin Shadbolt. He said that many (if not all) of them had tubes made of a form of Dural.

As I think I've related, I almost bought one in 1973, a beautiful little thing with the finest blending of the fields I've ever seen. It only cost $50 and, thinking it was a 4x32, I put it on layby, intending it to go on my sporterised FN Mauser .30/06 sambar rifle. But, just as I was about to hand it back, I noticed it was in fact a 6x32. Why the hell they ever made that one I still haven't really worked out.

Mine is a 6 x 42 (43?) steel tube. I saw an advert for it at the Malabar range abt 94. It read in part "Nickal scope (not Jap) 6x 42, needs repairs, $80 ono". Got a chuckle from the cockie's remarks "but it needs repairs" when I called by.

It was a no ball decision, repairs (regassing and reblue cost $120).

Smiths in Sinny had 2of 6x and a 4x (alloy) all NIB for $1400 all up abt 2002. I passed (no $) but a mate took them all.

so was you then! I've also seen this rifle but the last time looking for it, it was already so high that I had expected a much higher price and don't wait for the end.
the 70's style stock would be replaced with a straight pre-war stock from me immediately. It's laying around here for such a case.

maybe we should open an extra thread where everyone can announce the auction's he is willing to bid.
simply to avoid that one bid against the other.

sounds like you bet and won. My Kahles Helia 27 leaked after about 23 years and had to go home for regassing and new seals - that cost $540 only eight years after your repairs. Maybe it was only the big Nickels that were made of Dural - must track down that article.

There are a a number of optical repair mechs here (think theodolites etc). Just don't believe the guff that "it has to be repaired at the factory" all the time.

Since my last I've been told they morphed into Hertel und Reuss.

I don't know about the ownership, but Nickel are still going http://www.nickel-ag.com/en/default.aspx
They make hunting scopes but are also famous for their twin-post running target scopes
