URGENT - Transporting .450 no2's on a plane
      #17269 - 27/07/04 03:04 PM

I need some urgent advice on transporting my .450 No2 ammo on plane.

Airline rules demand the ammo be transported in original manufacturers packaging or equivalent - ie caseguards as well.

My problem is I have no "suitable" container for the ammo which is large enough for a .450 calibre shell 3 1/2 inches long plus bullet.

If a suitable container exists I don't have time to order it.

I do have two leather belt pouches which keep the cartridges separated and also a twenty round canvas "culling" belt which has individual loops. I think these keep the ammo just as secure as cardboard boxes but do not fit the letter of the regulations.

Most ammo cardboxes are too short too.

Two solutions I can see if to use a small plastic toolbox and put some styrofoam in it and press each cartridge into it. This will probably pass inspection.

The second idea is merely to put the cartridge belt and the pouches in the toolbox and this will actually keep the cartridges separated better and more secure. But if visibly inspected .... I could argue this logically but it does not fit the letter of the law.

Any other ideas, thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Also what products exist on the market for this purpose if ordered in advance.

Thanks.

I used a small tool box and foam when travelling on Canadian air. The nice part was the tool box could be locked. Interesting was they had me take my 375 out of a locked hard case at the ticket desk on my return while in line at a busy airport to show some girl who knew nothing that the gun was unloaded. The ammo was no problem and they liked it locked.

Good Luck

Twoyears ago coming back from South Africa, South African Airways ask me to produce my ammo. They put tape over the the latchs for the Case guards and on the end flaps of the cardboard boxes.

When you get back get hold of Huntington's They have ammo boxes for the big stuff.

A leather ammo wallet with a flap to cover the primer might work also.

NitroX:
When you contact the "transporting guns" guy at Qantas (?), to get the letter of authority to transport firearms and ammunition, get him to include the cartridges and specify a packaging standard with which your reloads can comply.

It is a very good idea to get this letter, in fact I would regard it as mandatory, because so many counter-staff are simply not trained in how to process firearms and ammunition. If you present the letter on their own letterhead, they can't argue, or interpret the regs their own way.

I would strongly advise against transporting ammunition in a cartridge-belt or belt-pouch, it could be interpreted as being "ready for action" by the afore-mentioned untrained staff!

If you are flying Virgin, or Slut (Jetstar), I don't know the requirements, although I'm sure other posters here can advise.

Tony

I have the letter already. It states the usual about factory packaging or "equivalent". As my cases had no packaging i guess I'm OK.

Hey I didn't know that about Virgin, perhaps they would have been to fly with afterall.

See PM.

Iff you are flying Quantas ,you are required to get intouch with Laurie Willoughby ,manager,Dangerous Goods Compliance.
You are required to carry the ammo separate to the firearm and I believe the maximum is 5 KGs of ammo.
Any safe storage container is suitable.
My wife usually only carries around one KG when she goes to world cups.

John,
What is the total overall length of your loaded cartridges?

NitroX
Huntingtons has 20 round plastic boxes that will hold 450 No2. Also the biggest MTM boxes will hold 50 450 No2's even when loaded with 500 grain Hornadys.
That does not help you now. The main thing the airlines want is some sort of packaging that seperates the rounds individually and offers primer protection. I always lock my ammo in a small Pelican case. You might could get by with your ammo in your belt ctg holders if they were placed in a Pelican or some other hard lockable case.

Alan

4.14 inches total length.

I'm going to use a plastic toolbox with styrofoam and some cloth padding.

Michael Montuori, Dangerous Goods Operations Manager, is the guy I have been advised to contact for this and the past. His name is also the signature.

Maybe the personal has changed recently or this is more than one contact.

In reply to:

John, one of my favourite containers for big NE rounds is the MTM 10 pack which I think was called the "Buff Ten".
I've used these for about 10 years or so and find they are very good.
However they will only JUST fit a COL of 4.1 which easily handles many of the NE rounds but may be just a tad too short for your loads.

Thesedays I'm a bit paranoid regarding ammo packaging for air travel as over the years I have had problems even though I had done my utmost to comply with their regulations and requirements.

The MTM 10 pack will hold 450 No2's loaded with the 350 grain Hornady bullet. It WILL NOT hold 450 No2's with 480 Woodleigh or 500 grain Hornaday bullets seated to the crimping groove.
