Thanksgiving Pigs for the Boys

I hope ya'll had a great Thanksgiving. Ours couldn't have been better...Aggies beat t.u. in a close football game tonight, and the two oldest boys (9 & 7) got their first pigs this afternoon.

Congratulations to the young hunters!!!!! Those two little weaners will eat a lot better than the big ugly stinkers those guys will have to chase in the future.!!

You're right about that. I don't usually even attempt to cook anything over 200 pounds, and I really prefer them under 100 pounds for meat. But it sure is fun stalking down the 250+ pound bruisers in close cover.

We're pretty spoiled down here...a brisk 78 F on Thanksgiving Day!!

When I was young, snow in our parts of Texas was an exciting once-a-decade event. Last year we had three days scattered throughout the winter that snow stuck & accumulated, and the boys actually got tired of seeing it.

HA! - we're tired of seeing it already and it's only just started. About May, we'll still be seeing it but it'll be going fast.

Nice job the little guys did.

What's the story on hog hunting down there, I've got a friend that wants me to go hog hunting with him in California but the costs are pretty high. Do you have any recommendation for where to go in Texas for a good weekend hog hunt?

The older boy was using my uncle's Remington VTR .308, and I'm not sure which rounds he had it loaded with. The younger one was shooting our 7mm-08 Ruger Frontier, using an HSM load with 139 grain Hornady Interbonds.

Just about any place in Texas can be good hog hunting, from the northern panhandle to the coastal plains (where these were killed). There's practically no public land available in Texas, so you'll have to hunt with an outfitter of some sort. Since pigs can be very nomadic, my recommendation is to book on the biggest ranch you can find, giving the outfitter a bunch of options to put you on them during your hunt. Also, if you hunt in southwest or very far south Texas you'll probably have a chance to hunt hogs and javelina (Peccary) on the same hunt.

Thanks. Do you know of any outfitters that you could recommend? Lastly, do you need a license to hunt hogs? I've looked at the Texas Fish and Game site but couldn't find anything about hogs there.

Parks & Wildlife uses some double-speak as it relates to feral hogs. They say you don't need a license to hunt "depredating feral hogs" (which is every loose pig in the state) but then say the special non-resident license will let you hunt exotics including feral hogs. I'd personally err on the safe side and plan to buy the ~$130 5-day license.

Unfortunately I can't make any recommendations on outfitters. We hunt them on our lease, when we can find them, or more often on ranches owned by family & friends that have become over-run. My most fruitful hunts are in Brazoria County (about an hour south of Houston) but I'm sure there are many, many places that would yield as many or more pigs.

I'd suggest figuring out the type of hunt you want (sitting in a stand, horseback with dogs, ATV with dogs, etc.) or the area of the state you want to hunt and then try some internet searches. There's really no shortage of pigs or people guiding hunts for them.
