Mark X Mauser Actions
      #172051 - 25/11/10 07:28 AM

If this issue has been discussed extensively in the past then please just point me towards the post(s).

Simply put, what is the practical difference between a Mark X Mauser (Yugo) and other types of Large Ring 98 Mauser actions such as a commercial FN or Argentine? I'm fairly familiar with how the values on line differ with FN being the most desirable, then Arg, then Mark X, but in terms of practical use such as strength, durability, tolerances, wear, etc. how does the Mark X rank?

To be more specific, both of my Mark X actions are marked Interarms; Manchester, England; and CZ. They are both beautifully finished inside and out, every bit as nice as any FN commercial action I've ever seen. By the way, one action has a serial number A2894XX and the other B2961XX.

I was under the impression that the Mark X and Zastava's are one and the same. I could be wrong on this. anybody know for sure.

Mark X was the stamp that was put onto the Zastava Mauser actions imported by Interarms. I have seen some with other stamps too. So it's safe to say that the Mark X is Zastava, but not all Zastava actions are stamped Mark X
The Remington M-798 is the same action.
There are other stamps too, but I don't pretend to know them all.

The MarkX is most likely made with stronger more modern steel. The older ones were machined and finished better than some of the more recent imports.

The commercial FN may be more desirable for those looking for a good value in a 98 style rifle.

From my vantage point as a custom gunmaker, the 09 DWM Argentine (and other German/CZ military contract system-98) are machined, polished and fitted to a higher level of precision and repeatability. The reason for this as a military contract firearm sold by the 100 thousands is obvious.

The FN military contract actions were not finished as nice as the DWM actions.

Many of the commercial FN and MarkX actions have the H-ring instead of the C-ring. This saved $ during manufacturing. The 98 was designed when ammo was unpredictable and injured soldiers from firing overloads was quite common.

H&H and other British makers have used the military contract 98 actions for 100 years to build best quality bolt guns. I'm not sure they used very many commercial FN or MarkX actions. Because of this precedence, putting the same amount of labor in building a best quality rifle from these different actions will retain very different values going forward for the next 100 years.

My objective as a custom gunmaker is to create something that will be handed down for generations.

However, there are many, many more interested in hunting with a reliable 98 style rifle that doesn't take several days/weeks to complete.

Hi every one. First time here, now i have found you all. I have been collecting and Selling mauser rifles for 21 years. Cant wait to chat to you all ,now i have found home.

I have several Mark -X actions . My early one Custon .257 roberts Imp ,built in 1985 is very well made and tight.
My trusty .270 made in 1990 is not as well made but is super accurate. it will put 5 rounds in to 3/8" all day regardless of ammo.
My 7mm mag is a piece of junk and wont feed or shoot.

I believe even Mauser in the 70s or 80s made rifles using the Zastava action.

A quick google of H & C rings has me more confused. Could you explain the difference please.

I beleive the FN actions aren't as designed 'safe' as ex-mil Mauser 98 designs. Is this correct ?

The H and c rings refer to the inner shoulder that the barrel is torqued against ,on earlier actions they only cut the right side for the extractor ,on later FN actions they cut both sides of the ring to simplify the machining process (read cost savings).

My .458 Win Mag is on a Mark X action and it is a good, reliable working rifle. They are a good base for a hunting rifle build IMHO and a good strong commercial action...many say that the Interarms is one of the best finished of the Zastava variants.

Mine is the Inrterarms Mk10 (didn't know they were different) and is like any other commercial action for finish.

The external finish of the Interarms Mk X (or Whitworth) is good, but the interior needs polishing. The feeding ramp usually needs polishing or will scratch brass. The bolt movement is also improved by polishing. These are easy to do. The accuracy is usually good since they used the good German Bohler steel barrels. The 798 and Charles Daly Zastavas are a step down in internal finish. I had a 375 H&H Daly/Zastava and there was no bedding in the stock. The barrel was partially freefloated except where it touched the side of the stock in one place. I bedded it properly and accuracy remarkedly increased. The early 98's are quality. The Argentine 1909's also have fine bottom metal which is the detraction of most military guns. The Commercial FN's are superb. This includes the Sears model 50's which can be turned into very nice custom guns.
