Double rifles in the movies
      #17183 - 26/07/04 01:38 AM

Just watching Jurassic Park again and admired the double rifle used by the Professional Hunter and was wondering what other movies can NE.com members think of where double rifles are used.

I can think of a few straight away.

Michael Douglas uses a good looking double rifle and pistol in “the Ghost and the Darkness.” Also in a few scenes, Val Kilmer tries to use a Farquharson Rifle. The only other movie I can think of is “Out of Africa” there are a number of good looking Doubles that film.

Oh yea, one other I just thought of there are two classic under leaver doubles in “Lock stock and two smoking barrels” I don’t remember if they say what they are, but they are one of the key elements of the film!

"Harry Black and the Tiger", with Stewart Granger, Barbara Rush and Anthony Steele. Some classic Tiger hunting mixed with the usual love interest.

"Sportsmans Paradise"
Highly praised and sought after rare film shot in The Northern Territory and produced by a local Aussie hero PH who sometimes posts here!
Plenty of doubles and heaps of edge of your seat chest pounding death defying action!
It has been rumoured that signed copies of this spectacular film have brought 6 figure sums at auction!

These were antique Holland & Hollands weren't they?

A good movie which I would not have thought about.

Anyone chime in if the doubles can be identifed. I want to write an eMagazine article with the movies and the doubles identified.

Actually he usually wears a tattered old cap which has a band made from best quality platted beaver fur!

I will send you a couple of tapes (the 6 figure signed ones of course) before I head off into the blue for the rest of the year.
Lately I've been too busy playing with my "big stick".

Well I guess I could but maybe the story will be more interesting after I return, seeing as I'm taking it as my main back up gun.
We'll see.

Hi,

The one Pete Posthwaite has in the second
Jurassic Park" is a 577 or 600 nitro by Butch Sercey isn't it?

There's always that 1970s classic, "Shout at the Devil" with Roger Moore and Lee Marvin...

Another obscure movie is the old John Wayne movie where he is the big game hunter in Africa. Hired to get animals for a zoo… (the mane escapes me at this time) can anyone help?

Who used a double rifle in Hatari? The Duke used a Winchester model 70 and "Kurt" and "Frenchy" also both used bolt actions. Red Buttons - Pockets? - He used a rocket. "Dallas" - she used a camera and some really tight pants, if I remember correctly.

THE LAST SAFARI with Stewart Granger...uses a .577 Westley Richards in the movie. The gun was featured in a Guns and Ammo Annual a few years back. KING SOLOMONS MINES, also with Stewart Granger. Uses a 8 bore Rhodda ( I believe) and this gun was featured on the cover of American Rifleman several years ago. Check out the book WHITE HUNTERS by Herne. It has a whole section on "Hollywood" Africa. I believe he mentions in that book that the rhino shot during the filming of SNOWS OF KILIMANJARO was actually shot by the hunter hired to protect the film crew. It wasn't meant to be shot, but charged.

The ABC series "The Lost World" has a keen hunter with a double not sure of make but it dropped a couple of T-REX'S when his Martini-Henry and Webley pistol failed to, it looked like a .577 or bigger.

Wasn't there a double shown in 'Legends of the Fall' when Pitt went a little nuts after WWI?
