Jaguars vs Leopards
      #17174 - 25/07/04 09:09 PM

Leopards have a notorious reputation in Africa and even more so in Asia.

The Jaguar seems to have no great stories of evil maneaters.

Is a Jaguar a pussy cat in comparison to the a Leopard?

It is true that there are no great stories of evil maneater jags, like there are with leopards, but I assure you, that is not because they are pussycats compared to leopards. You can throw mountain lions in the same category as the jags, also, as they also do not have the reputation for maneating that leopards have. But this is not because they are pussycats compared to the leopard. It is for a variety of other reasons. In the areas where jags live, there are not as many jags or people as there are leopards and people in leopard habitat. Also, when jags eat people, the outside world rarely hears about it. And with mountain lions, ever since European settlers first set foot on North America, everyone had firearms, which has always made it very difficult for mountain lions to eat people and live long to tell about it. This has not traditionally been the case in leopard habitat. The human populations in leopard areas have simply not been armed with firearms, in general, in the way North Americans have always been. A good example of this has been the recent increase in lions killing and eating people in California, where they are no longer hunted. They are proliferating beyond belief, and even worse, they are now beginning to look at people as something to eat rather than something to be feared. There was a scientist who recently pointed this out, and of course she was immediatedly repudiated and reviled by the animal lover fanatics for suggesting such a thing.. But it is the truth, nonetheless.. Over the last couple hundred or so years, human popolations in Asia and Africa have been a LOT more defenseless against big cats than human populations in North America. It was, in fact, the European settlers with their prolific firearms that extirpated the jag from the American South and West by the 1930's. Firearms were never anywhere near that prolific in Asia and Africa.

Anyway, you are absolutely right in that these cats do not have the maneating reputaton of leopards, but it is only because they lack the opportunity, NOT motive! The leopard has the motive and opportunity to eat people in large numbers. The other big cats have the motive to eat a lot of people, but compared to the leopard, few opportunities.

I will guarantee you, if you could go back 200 years, and take the leopard out of Asia and Africa, and put him in North America and the jungles of Central and South America, and relocate the mountain lion and jag to Asia and Africa, their respective contemporary reputations as maneaters would also be reversed accordingly. Then the question today would be, "Is the leopard a pussycat compared to the jag and mountain lion?" A cat, is a cat, is a cat.

Ingwe you are absolutely right, the leopard has a dangerous reputation as a man eater because of the oppurtunity it has had in India where people do not have arms to defend themselves and also because due to the population explosion man has encroached on its habitat. There have been cases of Jags.being maneaters but these are rare but neverthless the Jag. is no pussy.

From what I have read (old books), the Jaguar is a maneater. The Jaguar has a large range due to lower density of game in S. America. If you can ever get a copy of "Tigrero" by Sasha Siemel, get it. It is an interesting read about Sasha in the S. America doing the Gold Rush thing (sound familiar for several different continents). Anyway he has references to mankillers more than maneaters for certain Jaguars.

No animal is a born a maneater,it becomes one only when it is forced. For instance when it is too week to hunt another animal it finds man an easy prey, especially a defensless man. When there is no other prey around and only a man is available it has no other choice to satisfy it's hunger.Jim Corbett in one of his books mentioned an incident when on a narrow path he crossed a tiger but was careful not to look directly in its eyes and instead turned his face and passed by without being attacked.
On the contarary man is and has always been a animal eater .

Yes, I have heard this school of thought many times, but I am afraid that I must respectfully say that I personally do not in any way subscribe to this school of thought. I have simply seen too much irrefutable proof to the contrary. I have seen too many documented cases of all predators - mammals, reptiles, fish, and even birds - making dinner of humans when absolutely none of the above conditions were present. I am very sorry, but in my honest opinion that is simply Disney propaganda, and I would respectfully urge all fellow hunters not to fall for this "humans are bad - animals are good," propaganda, and to purge their minds of these kinds of thoughts.

Iqbal, you are a fellow hunter and I like you, but I would urge you to study more cases and give consideration to changing your opinion.

Igbal

I have to disagree with that comment also. While many maneaters become that way as you suggest many view man as a target of opportunity also. Man eating Bears, Lions and Tigers have all been active in areas of high animal populations.

George Rushby wrote of Lionesses teaching their cubs to be man eaters in Tanznia.

Just because a Tiger chooses not to attack doesn't mean it will not attack.

Ingwe, thanks for the advice. To tell you the truth i've not had any experiance with dangerous animals perhaps because we don't have any here.I did shoot a brown bear once but that was from a distance and was not threatened in any way. Some authors(hunters)do advicate this theory that maneaters are not born but made however based on your research i'm sure you must be right.
