Which Scope For My Double?
      #17072 - 23/07/04 09:46 AM

Ok guys, I'm going to treat my little 400-350 double to a new scope.
At present it wears a 2 1/2 power Leupold which works very well but as the rifle is such a good shooter I would like to increase the magnafornication a tad.
I don't want to increase the weight or overall size by any great amount so I'm thinking Leupold 2-7 compact, Leupold 1-4, Leupold 1 1/2 - 5 or Leupold 1 3/4 - 6.

Thumb clearance tube length and eye relief are ok with all these and this rifle does not change much, regulation wise, with scope changes as I did use it for a while with a 2 1/2 -8.
My choice at this stage is between the 1-4 and the 2-7 compact as I've had a fair amount of shooting with both types and like them both.
Is it worth spending the extra bucks for the 1 1/2 to 5 or 1 3/4 to 6?
What would be your choice and why?
This rifle is set up for use on Aussie game from pigs through to Buffalo and scrub bull.

Swarovski low powered variable with a red dot reticle. Like the one Christer has.

I don’t own a double; however there are some very good rules to keep in mind. Keep the scope light and low, and don’t over scope. I think your right on track with you idea for a Leupold 2-7 compact, Leupold 1-4, Leupold 1 1/2 - 5 or Leupold 1 3/4 – 6. Don’t over look a 4x or maybe a 6x I would not get any higher than that. Just MOH.

Alan

I have a 1 3/4x6 Leupold on my 400. It is long enough to mount on a Double or a single shot (important). It is light and rugged. It sits very low to the rifle. The optics in the new Leupolds are quite a bit better than the older models, particularly the varix II.

I am a Ziess fan and would always pick one over any other scope but I do like this one.

Take a look at the Leupold 1.75x6. It gathers more light than the 1.5x5. My wife has one on her 308, I have the 1.5x5 on my 375. Both have the heavy duplex which we really like.
In Africa I used a Swarovski 1.5-6x42 PV-1 with the illuminated circle dot reticle, on my 9,3x74R double. I really like this scope, but it might be a little larger than you want. The other scope that I have fitted to this rifle is a Leupold 2.5-8, with heavy duplex. It works well too.

NE450No2: Do you experience any change of impact / grouping when you change between your scopes on you light 9,3? Are you using claw mount or pivot mount ?

Ok, I don't own a "real" double but am going to put a scope on the EAA O/U .30-06 I just bought. Do you zero the scope to your most consistant barrel or as a rule should you zero it in the center of the two barrels at what ever range you are zeroing at? I have only fired 20 rounds from this rifle at 25 yards (barrels keeping the shots within 2 inchs offhand for 4 shot groups) so I may be hasty but I have a spare 2-7 Burris Compact on hand. I won't be scoping my other double, a Pedersoli Kodiak in 45-70.

On my Chapuis, the Rifle was factory regulated with the iron sights. I have two scopes in rings for this rifle, one a Leupold 2.5-8 and a Swarovski 1.5-6x42, both in Chapuis Pivot mounts. With either scope the rifle regulates very well shooting as good as most bolt actions to 200 yards from field positions. I have taken a coyote at 271 yards, with witnesses on film, measured after the shot, and a Kudu at 300+ yards with witnesses also on film.
If I had a double rifle that would not group both barrels together good enough for shots at animals at 200 yards I would sight in the scope for the most accurate barrel and use it like a single shot at that distance.
Or if your rifle was like my Chapuis and you must fire the right bbl first to get good groups, then I would sight in the scope for the right bbl.

I cannot understand why there is some resistance to using a scope on a double rifle.
My Chapuis balances and handles better than any scoped bolt rifle. The stock is perfectly suited to scope use.
I have made several shots on game with the 9,3 and scope that I would not even have attempted with iron sights.
I can somewhat see how Ray might have some resistance, as he, like Methuselah, is 969 years in the past, but JOHAN is European, HE should know better.

EVERY double 40 cal. and under should be fitted with a scope in QD mounts.

I see that you use either a Leupold 2.5-8 and a Swarovski 1.5-6x42, what would you recommend for a 375 (bolt gun)? )? Is there much noticeable “field” difference in say a 1.5 to 5x, 1.7 to 6x over the 2.5 to 8x

I have more or less decided on a Chapuis 9,3 with a Zeiss 1,5-6x42 as my first double. I have noticed that the rear iron sight is preventing a REAL low mount of this scope. I would like to order the rifle regulated with the scope, and only use the iron sights as back-up. (this is not to be used as a DG gun)
I dont't like the factory installed rear sight. I have got this mad idea of ordering it without the rear iron sight, and get one folding express sight installed after delivery.
Such a sight must be possible to fix in the upright position. I have seen something similar on old drillings, but not on double rifles.
Do you consider this feasible, and would it affect the regulation?

PS: I hope Ray doesn't see this.

My FN-Browning 9,3x74R wears a folding large V and is topped off by a Swarovski 1,25-4x24 (battue reticle) in Sühler claw mounts. This combo suits me prefectly for drive hunting with dogs were running shots are the rule. BTW, I never used the iron sights again since I scoped the rifle...

3 shots do not make a group, they show a point of aim or impact.
5 shots are a group.

I have become quite fond of the Swarovski 1.5x6 with the illuminated circle dot reticle. I think I will have to get one for my 375. The illuminated reticle works great for pigs, black bear, lion, leopard, etc in low light.

My Chapuis is the UGEX model, no cheek piece. The standard scope mount feels perfect. I have to cheek the rifle hard when I use the iron sights. The stock seems perfect with the scope.
I have been very happy with my chapuis, it is my most favorite rifle under 40 cal.

...good choice for a scope...the optics in the zeiss vmv 1.5-6x42 are amongst the finest available, imho, and it makes a good match for medium bores at effective ranges of 50 - 200 yards, again, imho...
