Plains Game & 375 Ruger
      #165312 - 31/07/10 12:14 PM

Am not long returned from RSA plains game hunt. I agonised over what rifle/caliber for some time & settled on a 375Ruger Alaskan & 2.5x8 Leupold, not a tradittional African gun but is a good unit for Samabar in Oz with our wet winter hunting.
Rifle & cartridge performed flawlessly (although I didn't) with the 270gn Hornady factory stuff on all species, Warthog to Kudu and from 60 to 140 metres. Only had one bullet exit and that was on Impala at 60 metres. All went down quickly. Am going back for buffalo & Sable in 2012 & would be interested to hear if anyone has a good & tried buff load for this cartridge.

Great site & regards to all.

Well-done on your recent hunt. We'd love to see pictures of your adventure. If you sign-up to www.ammoguide.com you might get some heavier loads.

Welcome to NE Messmate- would never of guessed you hail from Victoria with your Forum name. Yep I use to work in one of the timber mills in the hills.

Looks like you enjoyed yourself and had good results. Well done.

Cheers
Greg

Welcome.

I think a 300 grain Barnes TSX would be the ticket for Buff and sable @ 2600 fps with your pick of powder.

Cheers Neale.

Greg. You'll know then the name for that other species is woollybutt....now that can conjure up a bad image... so 'twas avoided as a username.

The Barnes was one I had in mind amongst others. All funds being squirrelled away for taxidermy bill at present but will put the bits & pieces together for loading up shortly.
Think you've got that other caliber I want...the 404Jeffrey...I must get more overtime..or sell my dog.

Thanks

Coming from Australia you'd be hard pressed to beat a good 300 grain Woodleigh PP for buffalo. This bullet anywhere between 2450fps and 2680 fps muzzle velocity seems to hit buff really hard.

If you could handle a slightly more curved trajectory you could go up to the 350 grain Woodleigh. This load to my mind really bridges the gap between the 375 and 416's. It expands, penetrates and does everything you could expect of this class of cartridge.

Not sure what distances sable are shot at for me to offer an opinion, but you'd think a good standard bullet would sort sable out quick smart in 375.

Rigbyuser....have had a few recommendations for the Woodleigh's... has a lot of backers it seems with the 300 "Hydrostatic" in particular getting good results on our buff apparently so will look at those & 350's & work up some loads.
The 270 gn factory Hornadys worked very well on Kudu, Waterbuck,Gemsbok etc & everything dropped pretty well on the spot but I was a little surprised with the amount of bullet disentegration.
Having said that...when they're dead I guess they're dead...& the 270 grnrs are adequate for the plains game.
Cheers.

I was very pleased as well with the performance of the .375 ruger. I took an African model and handloaded 300 grain Swift A-Frames with a near maximum load of Reloader powder. I have the data at home, however I got it of the internet. I am using reloader in the .416 ruger too. I used a .458 lott for my buffalo and hippo, but I would have been very comfortable shooting them with the .375 ruger. I have shot wild boar here in the states and everything thing from impala to kudu with mine. I have a 2.5-8 Zeiss Conquest on mine with Warne QD rings. I love it, simple as that..

Sounds like an interesting battery you have there. How does the 416 compare to the 375 in recoil?
Also I'd be interested in what size Warne QD's you used....high, medium, low or combination?

Cheers
