My kid shot a deer today.
      #169353 - 11/10/10 01:33 PM

Today, age 9, 60-70 yards shot, AR-15 with ACOG, Hornady 55 gr red tips:

Last year, AR-15 with Eotech and 4x magnifier, Sierra Match King 77 grainers, 125 yards:

2 yrs ago, AR-15 with 6-18 Leupold mildot, 50 grain Sierra Blitz Kings (green tip), 200 yards:

None of the bullets performed satisfactorily. I know, it's just a .223.

Great job, Kid!!!

Great job, 500, too, for introducing your kid to critters and the AR15!

Congratulations, your boy did great. She looks like she should be good eating. One hell of a dog too, get a packsaddle to fit and looks like he could pack that deer with no problem.

Ours have to wait till they're twelve to hunt big game. Mine (boy 8 and girl 6) have just been shooting grasshoppers with their Red Ryders.

BTW huge mutt you have and us Aussies are jealous of your ugly semi-auto hunting rifle.

Thanks guys!

I know that the liberals think us evil for using AR15s, but currently the AR15 is the best selling rifle in the US. The market for common bolt and lever rifles is very soft.

The dog goes along for the ride, for the camping, and for processing of the animal, but he is not allowed to participate in a deer hunt. But he quite enjoys walking with us on small game hunts.

That's great Dan! Like others have mentioned, I have no doubt that he'll soon be outshooting his father, and will be going after tuskless cows with your 500NE!

Fantastic, Dan! Congratulations to the young man and to you! Can't think of anything that would inspire more pride in a father than this!

Yes, it's great to see the boys carrying on their genetic inheritance.

Mine haven't gone much past ducks and rabbits but maybe they would be more enthused if allowed to used AR15s. Instead they prefer to stay home and play shoot'em-up games on their computers, though they do like an afternoon at the skeet range. One saw lots of deer when he was young but somehow hunting them now is too much walking without getting a shot.

Well done mate.
He will need to hunt many deer to feed that "chain jerker".

Dan,

Bravo for the successful hunt and for your noble effort at creating an avid hunter to walk in the ever-narrowing path we follow. He will crave double rifles soon enough.

And also my heartfelt pleasure in seeing photos of your English Mastiff. In the early '80's we had a female named "Sarah" who was entirely a part of our family. The kids loved that dog like a sibling, and the dog returned their love in full. Here's a scanned photo taken in 1985 of my kids with Sarah. My daughter was 5 then and now is 30 years old.

In the yard I made a big sand box for the kids to play in. By "big" I mean it was 8 feet by 8 feet and held a truckload of sand. They used to have the greatest delight in burying Sarah in the sand. Using little plastic shovels they would cover her until only her face and nose were visible. It looked like the Sphinx. She would lie there patiently. Once the job was done they would walk away a short distance. Then they would call Sarah. The dog would stand up and shake off the sand. They all thought this was amusing to the extreme, and the sketch was re-played many times.

My blessings to you and your family.

Curl
