.500 Nitro Double
      #169310 - 10/10/10 08:15 PM

G'day guy's!

I'm in the market for double .500. I'm thinking about a Merkel 140 or a Verney-Carron Azur Safari but I'm confused about what would be the better gun (i.e. stronger, better built and regulated). I'd also consider a Kreighoff but as I understand they don't make an ejector gun??! I want an ejector.

I've heard some bad things about the Merkel 140, but this criticism was issued by someone who sells guns by another big German gun maker....Namely that they shot loose very quickley, particularly with the big calibres i.e. .500 and .470.

Can anyone give me some advice.

NitroNut.

I think both would do the job.

As for the "bad things" I wouldn't not buy a Merkel because of those comments. A lot of Merkels are sold in .470 with none of those problems.

I would look at a Verney-Carron or a Heym, but would also consider a Merkel or a Krieghoff, but that doesn't have ejectors.

Having owned both makes I don't think you could go far wrong with either one.

Having said that, for a few dollars more, with the Verney-Carron you get hand checkered, hand engraved, and most importantly a gun that is custom made to fit you.

Good luck!

I think there were some early ones, maybe 10 yrs ago, which shot loose in .416 Rigby. But I have not heard of them shooting loose in .470 or .500. However, the very design of a double makes it likely that the gun will eventually come off face if shot extensively. (IMO)

A vote for Verney-Carron. I consider Jean Verney-Carron a friend and would suggest talking to him. He is a straight shooter and their guns have recently received several awards.

Good hunting and do post when you have decided!

What about the allegations that Merkels tend to double? Was there anything in that or just sour grapes?

G'day again,

Thanks for the good advice.

I do like the look of the VC.....And I can only assume they shoot as good as they look.

How is the recoil with a .500? I can shoot my .416 Rigby without any problems. Is the .500 going to be a big step up?

I put about 500+ rounds through my .375 Merkel without a single doubling and still tight on face.

Recoil will depend much upon the guns fit and weight. I ordered my V-C .500 to weigh 11 1/2# - 12# and made to my dimensions. When delivered it weighed 11# 9oz. and fits well. Recoil is very managable. And yes, it does shoot as good as it looks.

Just how strong is the VC action? Do they come "off-face"?

I really like the look of the VC and on the web page if says the actions able to withstand 5700 bar which is 570Mpa.....Strong yes but I guess I'd have expected more?

NitroNut

What are English guns (500 Nitro's) proofed to ?
(or any of the Euro proofs).

All of mine are old style proofs so I couldn't tell you
but it will be stamped on the flats of the barrels.

Not sure.

Hopefully Mike can tell us when he gets to London. But I'm guessing the older guns were proofed to about 3000 bar or 300 MPa.

5700 bar is equal to 82650 psi, compare that with other mfg's.

I have a customer that has put over 4,000 rounds through his V-C sxs rifle and it shows no signs of wear, at this rate the rifling in the barrels will wear out before it comes off face. He also used this gun for several years to win the Vintigers SXS Rifle shoot.

The V-C has 6 lugs, and a locking bolt that is 1/4" thick and 1" long.

Wow.

Over 80Kpsi in a .500 double rifle.
That's madness.

That would be amazingly loud.

I have owned a 470 by Merkel and regret selling it. I have now just ordered another one, made this time by Verney-Carron.

Ozhunter,

Have you ordered your V-C through Safari F/A at Bexley? I think they are the Australian importer of V-C guns?

NitroNut, first off you are comparing apples to oranges! The Merkel can be had in the $8K range while the V/C starts at $12K. Both are very strong rifles.

I have two Merkel 140s, a 140E, 9.3X74R, and a Safari 140-2 470NE. Both have been shot a lot in the 10 yrs I've had the 9.3, the 10 yrs I and the previous owner have had the 470NE. They both shoot very well and are regulated to perfection. Neither have shown any tendency to shoot loose.

When the big bore Merkels were first imported into the USA there were a lot of rumors that these rifles would shoot loose in no more that 50 rounds! 10 years later they are still shooting just fine. The rumors were started by folks who were selling other barnds that couldn't compete with the Merkel price point. The fact is it was all smoke blown up the old A-hole, and was simply not true. I know personally of about 15 guys who have one or more Merkels and not one has come off face.

The only objection I had with the Merkel big bore doubles was their chambering them with the rimless, and belted rimless cartridges 375H&H, and 416 Rigby. Not because of the pressure, but because of the rimless/belted rimless cases in a double rifle. Those two you can buy used today for way less than the 450/400, 470NE and 500NE because of those rimless cases.

My 470NE is an extractor rifle, while the little 140E 9.3 is an ejector rifle. Both are Shoelump barrels, as are the V/C doubles.

The new Merkels today are now Mono-block barrels, and are ejector rifles, and are chambered for 375H&H, 450/400 3", 416 Rigby, 470NE and 500NE.

The V/C rifles are very nice rifles with a very unique lock-up design, that seems very strong. A friend who imported three of the V/C doubles brought them to the DRSS annual get together/Wild boar hunt at the 96,000 acre low fence 4K ranch near Brady, Texas. These rifles were examined by several long time double rifle owner, and shooters, and the general word was very well made and appointed. We shot all three, and they shot very well too. I found that the off these shelf rifles fit me quite well, but so do all the Merkels. Both can be ordered custom fitted to you at extra cost. However, the V/C is prettier while the Merkel is a working rifle, so it depends what you want your money to go for. If it is quality of construction, and reliability and price is a factor, then the Merkel would be my pick because in this case there is no difference between them , but if the glitz is something you desire, then by all means buy the V/C.

I guess what I could have said with fewer words is, 6 of one, half dozen of the other except for price!
