450/400 just seems more like a "double rifle" cartridge to me. 303 is a bolt gun round. Nothing was given as to intended purpose or the like.

I voted for the .303. A petit little double in that caliber, and one have history collected in one gun, as for gun and cartridge. The 450/400 maybe a good caliber indeed, but the way I see it, a good double for me from where its gets interesting, is from .577cal and upwards.

Gosh, Bonanza! Did you have to start the Marilyn Monroe Vs Grace Kelly debate all over again?

I voted for the 303 - a lovely round and it makes up into a beautiful double rifle.

Good hunting!

Two great old rimmed cartridges but the calibers seem so different in purpose. I tend to view doubles as dangerous game rifles or at least needing that capability so I would say .450/400.

My thinking is if you don't need 4000 ft/lbs of energy, only plan to hunt big game, love a double rifle, and want mild recoil then the .303 is a good choice.

Hey Blair,

Do I get to vote three times? That would help even things up for the .303!

Funny, I voted .303 as well. A nice light double good to about 300 yards absolute max, easy to shoot, no recoil, 215gr. bullet - couldn't really ask for a more appropriate general hunting rifle. If the first shot is right, you don't need any more power than that.

That said, had a choice included a 9.3x74, that's here my vote would have gone.

If I'm looking at 300yd shots, I'm thinking bolt action not double. But I wouldn't turn down a chance to shoot Curl's 303 double. A double rifle makes me think about dangerous game; that's why I voted 450/400.

Thanks for sharing Curl.

The picture below with the Purdey in .303 is about as petit as a .303 ever will become. I saw Champlin Firearms at one time had a .303 Purdey, very similar.

I own a 450/400 3 inch double rifle. I voted for the 450/400. That being said, if I were to add a double to my collection, I have a 9.3X74R and a 8X57 RJS, it would most likely be a .303 or even a 30-30. Especially, if all you were going to hunt was North American non-dangerous game.

I would have a .303 any day over a .375 Flanged. I think the .375 Flanged is way under powered.

My least favorite double is the 9.3X74R. I do most of my hunting with the 450/400 and 8X57RJS.
Recoil is not an issue with a 10 pound 450/400.

With a new 450/400 you can shoot traditional 400 grain Woodleighs, Hornady DGX & S, Hawk, and 405 Winchester 300 grain bullets.

Just my opine.

Mate,

It really depends on what you want to use it for?

A .303 would be a great deer and plains game DR.

A .450/400 would be able to hunt them as well, but a heavier, possibly more expensive rifle, and more recoil and possibly more meat damage.

I voted for a .450/400.

Some members may not be aware that we have a Facebook page and several members there responded to this thread - I have requested them to post here, but, in the meantime, here are their responses:

1. Baron Radu Von Goldinger ‎.303 is a good caliber bu in a double is bizarre choice! Just get a single shot rifle in that cal and save the double for 450-400! And remember: what a .303 does a .308 does better a 30-06 does harder and a 300 Win Mag does perfect.

2. Asif Ali ‎450-400 double period

3. Tejpal Sawhney no brainer - 450 - 500.

4. Tejpal Sawhney harder hitting, shorter and more manoverable in jungle and high grasses.

Good hunting!

If I could make one myself, the .303 would be high on my list (though a .577 NfB would be higher). But the .303 is marginal on sambar whereas the .450/.400 is just right and kicks less than the .338.

I guess it all depends on where you live and/or where you hunt.
I'd have to say that from a practical viewpoint, the 303 would be a better caliber for most Americans. Over 90% of all the "big game kills" made in the USA are deer.
If those 2 were the only choices I was offered, I would go with the 450/400 because elk is the common game here, and we have LOTS of grizzlies too, so I would be better served with the larger caliber. I now have a 9.3X74R in a Ruger and I have to say, I can easily see why that caliber is so well liked in Europe and Africa.

Still.......... a 303 double in a light handy fast rifle would be a real gem.

Dang…………….it sucks not having a lot of money.

That .303, whilst a lovely rifle, has no scope attachments. Hell I couldn´t use iron sights at 200 yds, let alone 300 ! For me double rifle has to be .375 (with scope possibilities) and bigger with irons but I wouldn´t use the bigger one on plains game unless I got lucky, rgds Mike

Even though I have a 450/400 on order I vote neither. For big game hunting in NA the 9,3x74R is the perfect big game double.
For Alaska hunting my vote would be the 450/400.

.303

Regulate the irons for the Woodleigh 215 or the Remington 180 RNCL {the latter is really an under-rated but super bullet}.

Quick detachable scope mounts, definitely.

Set the scope up for the 150 grain Hornady Spire Point for a single-shot {forget double regulation if you must}. Super bullet as I've tested it.

Let the world tell you that thing is a short range rifle ONLY and then go ahead and kill all the US game you want at out to 250-300 yards.

You won't regret it.

With the need for a house remodel, new barns, kids in college and taxes on the horizon I can't see myself doing anything double-like for a long time, but if I did, I would, and this set-up would definitely be in the top running.

It will be a few months before I have it to photo. Off the top of my head, I asked Verney-Carron that it weigh 7lb in 303 and 8lb with the 375F barrels, splinter forearm, small round cheekpiece, 26" barrels on both sets, bolted safety with extended upper tang, case colored frame, rounded frame, no palm swell, day night front sight with single shallow V rear sight, pivot bases, tear drops on cheek panels, sideplates (Verney-Carron does not offer a true sidelock in the hammerless AZUR model) with niter blued dummy pins, and English style scroll engraving.
I am building it not only to use but so that I have a some guns with different features for taking to shows as examples of what they can build. As many of the V-C guns are made to order that way a customer can actually see first hand the different features.
