Brakes on ruger #1 Big Bore Rifles
      #16873 - 19/07/04 06:17 AM

Do most ruger #1 Big Bore rifles need Muzzle Brakes or porting to tame recoil?Anyone got any recommendations?I know of the Answer brake,Magna -porting. Can local gunsmiths do this kind of work in there shop?Is it almost necessary after 375H&H Magnum type recoil in the ruger #1?
Will it be better not to brake because of the extra noise?
I just have noticed a lot of them that are being sold used have the muzzle brakes or porting on the them from previous owner.

I do not own a Ruger #1 however I do have strong opinions about brakes. First I would not own a rifle with a brake. If your gun has a “recoil” issue, there are several other things one can do that will work much better. First Most brakes only reduce recoil by about 5% there are better at reducing muzzle rise. The trade off is the expositional increase in report. A better way to manage recoil is through the use of “dead mules” or other systems of adding weight to a stock. The #1’s I have picked up are pretty heavy in the first place, and I would only add a dead mule in the four end If I felt that a good decelerator recoil pad did not salve the problem. Another way to manage recoil (though controversial on big bore rifles) is the thumbhole stock. A well made TH will reduce recoil by some 50 to 70%. I have seen two very nice TH stocks put on #1’s. They looked great and felt great. (although I did not fire the weapon) One last thought on recoil is for the shouter to use the sling around the non shouting arm. As the #1 Tropical has a well placed barrel band, using the sling to steady the rifle and reduce barrel rise seems like a must. This is just MHO.

I just cannot fathom putting a brake on a No.1. I know it has been done, but I couldn't do it.

The No.1's stock design is pretty good for handling recoil, at least for me. Their recoil pad isn't, it's hard as a brick (at least the old red ones are). I think with a good recoil pad, the No.1 would be comfortable in any chambering they offer. If you go to something much more recoil fierce, well, I'd weight the sucker down and find the best recoil pad I could.

I've had No.1's in 338 and 416 Rigby on the large end. If you are going to play with cartridges with the horsepower of the Rigby or 458 Lott, expect you will get rumbled a bit. We all must pay for our sport, in one way or another. Proper stock fit and shooting form go a long way in helping deal with recoil. As does practice.

Of course, I cringed and closed my eyes when Ruger brought out the stainless/laminated version of the No.1. That ain't right and I don't like it one bit!

What did you not like about the stainless/laminated version? is it just the look or is it a recoil thing? Also how you rate the #1 in 416 Rigby in terms of recoil?

Anyone ever try the pachmayr leather slip on pad on a ruger #1?Will it slip over the factory pad? Iam not going to install a brake,Will just try a different pad.My ruger factory pad is only 1/2inch thick. There has got to be something thats better. Also do the big bore double rifles come with factory recoil pads or do the owners just shoot them with out Pads and just take the kick?Seems like the470/ 458lott would be hard on the shoulder with out a very good recoil pad.Anyone have a favorite?

I just detest the look stainless/synthetic and the "plywood" looking laminates. The No.1 is about bringing the 19th century firearms to the modern chamberings. It's a loose translation of the British Farquharson of the late 1800's. To make it of stainless steel and plywood looking laminate is just an abomination of the firearm that Bill Ruger introduced.

That's just a personal thing with me. Yeah, I know you don't have to take care of stainless or synthetics or laminates like you do blued steel and walnut, but I've never had a problem with any of my blued steel and walnut guns. From coastal hunting to hunting high in the mountains, if you take care of your rifle, it will take care of you.

The recoil with the 416 was substantial. However I don't think it was anywhere near as bad as the 10.5 lb 500 Jeffery with Buff loads. Not something you would want to shoot at the bench for 20 shots, but if you practice and have shot hard recoiling guns well before, it isn't hard to master.

Blackbearhunter, I'm not fond of brakes on any rifle! A few years ago, I bought six Ruger No1 rifles at an estate sale. there was a 243 Win, and 7mm mag, a 300Win Mag, a 338Win Mag, a 375 H&H, and a 458 Win Mag. As I already had rifles that were chambered for everyone of the calibers, I had handloaded ammo on hand. Headed out to the deasert with all the rifles, and a big box of ammo, my friend, and I wanted to see if these things would shoot!

I started with the 243, and slowly worked up the line to the 338 which was begining to feel the recoil. My friend was loading them for me, and handing them to me to shoot. He thought it would be funny to skip the 338, and hand me the 375 H&H with me thinking it was the 338! I fired it and it felt like the 7mm I had just fired! I said "man! that is the lightest kicking 338 I ever fired! He began to laugh, thinking I was jokeing! Then he told me it was a 375 H&H, and I didn't believe him. Sure enough it was a 375H&H, so we looked it over and found it had been MAG-NA-PORTED, and had a Pachmeyer decelarator recoil pad. When I finely fired the 338, which wasn't ported, it was a wake up call! The 375 H&H felt like a 7mm Rem mag, and the 338 win mag felt just like my Mod 70 338.

I still don't like BRAKES but I can live with porting the barrel, if the rifle is uncomfortable to shoot otherwise. I like the stock mounted recoil reducers even less than BRAKES, because they seem to screw up the balance of the rifle! All only personal with me, and others may do as it pleases them!
