When did Steyr-Mannlicher go to the plastic trigger guard?
      #168700 - 29/09/10 01:19 PM

Which model and year did they switch from the metal to plastic trigger guards?

Agree! I think they started using plastic on everything when the SBS models came on the scene.
I believe the first plastic stock and trigger guard was on the M3 'Professional' which pre-dates the SBS - I got mine in 1995 but they were around for a few years before that. Accurate rifle with a great barrel and action, but its not just the trigger guard, its all the bottom metal that was replaced by plastic. It is a one piece out unit that extends from the front action screw to the rear screw behind the trigger guard and includes the magazine surround that the plastic rotary magazine slots into.
I am on my 3rd unit - replaced one when I discovered that plastic and bore cleaner doesn't mix well, and another because it cracked after a particularly excessive load testing session shooting from a bench. It is a great shooting rifle, but would be even better with a laminate stock and metal magazine and bottom metal!

It went something like this -

The "proper" MS with split bridge and all metal construction was made up until about 1972. They then brought out the M72 which was a front locking, 60 degree bolt lift action with a plastic mag rotor and some alloy parts in the mag. Soon after that they started producing the rear locking Steyr Mannlichers with the makrolon trigger guard and removable rotary mag.

Cheers

I think you are right. The first rear-locking 60* bolt rifles had metal trigger guards and magazines and wood stocks. There were luxus and standard models (was it SL, M and S action lengths or something?). My 'professional' was a synthetic stock and trigger guard version of this.
Now I believe all the current generation with SBS bolts (3 position bolt) are all plastic or makrolon trigger guards as you said, whether wood or synthetic stocked

I think you both are wrong! According to my old issues of the "Drutsche Waffen Journal" the first Steyr-Mannlicher of the rear locking-lug type was shown to the public October 1966, it was a short, .222, action model SL already with a plastic triggerguard/magazine and walnut stock. The medium M and long L actions were added to the line before 1971, all rear lockup and plastic tg/mag.
In 1972 Steyr offered an intended luxury rifle, the multiple 60* front-locking lug, steel triggerguard and steel single stack so-called "Mannlicher-Schoenauer M72". This luxury rifle was apparently not a real success or to expensive to make, as it soon faded from the line.
In it's place they introduced the Steyr-Mannlicher Luxus M" in 1978, essentially the rear-locking action of the Steyr-Mannlicher S, M, L line combined with a steel triggerguard and the single-stack mag of the M72. In due time this try at a luxury rifle disappeared too.

BTW, the first plastic - stocked Steyr-Mannlicher,rear lockup, plastic triggerguard, plastic rotary magazine, was the SSG69, developed 1969 as a .308 sniper rifle for Austrian army and police.
As I hate plastic stocks on rifles, I don't care about the others. In fact, I don't care about the Steyr-Mannlicher or fi the Blaser R93 at all.I get pimples and itches from touching...

kuduae

With respect you are wrong re the mag style of the M72. It was/is definitely a rotary mag with a plastic rotar and some sort of alloy for the rest of the mag body. I know because I have one. It was my first CF rifle bought at age 17 after a couple of years of saving my pennies. It is now on its 3rd rotar assembly - being plastic they tend to break.

Cheers.

I was in a gun store in New Zealand when someone got his new Steyr-Mannlicher - an early one about 30 years ago. He wasn't happy with the plastic mag. However, it's not just plastic but Macrolon, if I recall, which is a military spec material. There were 2 mags with the gun and the guy said he only needed one so the rep, to prove a point, put the second mag on the floor and then jumped on it, (don't try this at home folks !). Anyway it shot out from under his shoes, bounced around several shop fixtures and survived it all without a scratch which proved that, it may be "plastic" but it certainly wasn't weak. Some years later I related this at the Steyr plant in Austria and they weren't a bit surprised saying that this material is used on many of their military arms and has to meet very high standards of strength and durability. Having said all that, I sold mine and now shoot Schoenauers.

I too own a Steyr S dated 1994/95 in .300Wm and I agree with your comments,It is a great shooting rifle, with a glass smooth action.

If it was possible to replace the bottom plastic and trigger guard with aftermarket metal parts, It would be even better.

Can you please let me know where you bought your replacement parts, I might just buy one set to be on the safe side. Also I´ve been playing in my head with the idea of changing the front sight on my rifle, but due to the unusual attachment sistem I could not find a suitable one yet, do you know of a bead type front sight that can be mounted on “older” steyrs

Cheer´s

The plastic Steyr-Mannlicher rotary mags don't break...unless they are weighted down with ammunition in them...drop one filled with ammo on rocky ground and it will not just crack, it will break at the very points required for proper functioning abnd you will be left with a pile of plastic and some metal screws and springs.

I have a steyr classic light in 30-06. I really like the rifle. Extremely light and handy, but I was disappointed that it came with the plastic trigger guard . It's a well finished rifle with a nice stock. I can understand plastic with a synthetic stock but not on a classic timber stocked rifle. I'd love to know if anyone is fabricating aftermarket steel replacements.

I think a lot of European guns unapologetically come with plastic trigger guards and other bits of bottom metal because there is a long history in Europe of using horn for these pieces, and its only a small step from horn to plastic (some people can't even seem to tell them apart)...but its a much bigger step from steel to plastic.
