Here's a sweet little rifle that started life as a Charles Daly mini Mauser.
Thanks to Nitro for the opportunity to post this.

There's some more pictures of this in the stockmaking section here:

Watched the build of this exquisite piece of gunmakers art come together over on AR and on 24hr Campfire. Have it saved for reference.

Nice of you to join us here James.

Hi James,

Welcome to NitroExpress.com. I visited your web site and love the way you utilise one machine for both wood and metal work. Do you use a CAD program like MasterCam or do you program your machine from the machine keyboard.

Great work,

Cheers from Australia,

Jeff Gray

Thanks guys. Projects like these usually don't happen without a client willing to give direction in the same direction the gunmaker wants to go. As well as taking suggestions on wood selection, and other details.

Jeff
Most of my projects start out by drawing them 2D in CAD. This allows me to move stuff around before cutting any chips to get the look I want. I don't normally draw in 3D. My current CNC is a ProtoTrak 2axis on a Bridgeport copy. It's pretty quick to just program at the machine. I use "Millwrite" for converting a 2D DXF for lettering. The stock pattern for this project was inlet on the ProtoTrak and side profile & cheekpiece cut as well. The pattern was then shaped by hand and sent to the client. After adding a little requested "meat" in the grip it was glassed to the metalwork and duplicated on my manual duplicator. Knowing this piece of wood had the wow factor, I video taped the duplicating process. Some day I'll have some time to process the video.

Welcome James. What a stunning introduction.

Please tell us more about this rifle. Starting with the blank please!

A true symphony of wood and metal.

Cheers,

Chris

The blank came from Turkey. I can remember seeing it for sale but thought twice about doing a wire transfer. Soon it was marked sold. Some years later I find it in the mail as a replacement for a stock blank that had great color & figure in the butt stock and mild color up front. The nut of it is I was looking for more uniform color throughout. This is the most difficult to inlet blank I've ever worked on. The wood didn't respond well to cutting or scraping but eventually the inlet turned out pretty good without having to fill it with glass.

The stock finish is heavily tinted with ground alkanet root throughout the finishing process.

Shane Thompson started the metalwork with the action detailing, scope bases, barrel & attached hardware. I finished the metalwork with a custom bolt handle, safety, floormetal, trigger, & gripcap.

After stocking Roger Kehr did a superb job matting the sighting hardware, inlaying a some gold lines, lettering and a carving just enough scroll.

James,
Beautiful work!
I wonder about the way the wood is taken down on the left side of the bolt. I have seen this on other rifles as well but have wondered if it is purposeful. Looks like the wood in front of the bolt release is really thin (maybe fragile) when shaped this way.
Not a critique, your woodwork is obviously beyond reproach, just wondering if this is a trademark of yours or others'.

Really lovely work thank you for posting.

The pictures by the way, are some of the best quality I have seen in some time, the background really helps show the details.

Thanks
The action is detailed like a G33/40 so the wood line has to drop down on the left side. The bevel like an ejection port was at the request of the client. That little piece of wood in front of the bolt stop survived through the stocking process. Pretty easy to break off when the metal work isn't in the stock. When the rifle is assembled it is fairly well protected. Most custom Mausers with the thumb slot have this same little fin of wood and they seem to stay put.

The safety was a standard 98 3-position designed by Pete Grisel and now sold by Dakota Arms.
I trimmed the flange to fit the smaller action and also machined the body of the shroud to follow the internal cuts a little more like a real 98 shroud. A few buttress threads on the shroud had to be trimmed to match the miniX and the Double D shaped hole drilled out and a bushing that fits the firing pin inserted in the DD place. The nose of the cocking piece gets shortened on my little Hardinge Horizontal mill with a spiral milling attachment. This allows me to keep the helix that matches the cocking cam in the back of the bolt. It's a lot of work to fit one of these safeties to a miniX, but well worth the effort.

Stunning Craftsmanship James, thanks for sharing!

About the stock finish... you mentioned alkanet root as a colouring agent, did you use it steeped in the (boiled?) linseed oil finish? Or mixed with spirit to stain the bare walnut?

Love the soft glow from the wood, be very interested in hearing more about how you achieved such a great result...

Cheers

TM

The finishing process was gleaned from Duane Wiebe. He has it posted on his web site. It uses Dalys finishes. SeaFin Ship-n-Shore for sealer & SeaFin Teak oil & rottenstone for filling pores in about 30 coats. Both the finishes were dyed with ground alkanet. Linseed oil might have given a little better color, but this rifle is going to get hunted hard in a humid environment. The extra finish on the barrel after finishing was some of the hardest to remove I've ever used.

Forgot to add, I bleached the stock with oxalic acid before finishing.

Could you enlighten me-us on first the need to bleach the stock and what it achieves. How does it effect the colour of the stock after the finish is applied.

Duane got a written response from H&H years ago and they said that they bleached every stock before using the alkanet root to color the stock. I'm just riding on the predictable results that others have had.
