Get onto the AQIS website> I believe it's based on what CITES prohibits and OZ as a co-signatory supports.

Pete,

I will see if I can find an easy to understand list. Unless someone else does in the meantime.

A couple of the principal ones prohibted:

Leopards can not be imported but lions with a CITES permit can.

Elephant.

Hi PeteQLD,

I totally agree, it is very hard to get a clear answer from that site but there are a couple of forum members that have had this experience down pat. I also find myself in the same boat as you but it was suggested to me to ask one of the larger Australian taxidermy people who are also quarantine agents authorised to accept trophies here in Oz, there is one in the Melbourne area but can't think of their name at the moment as they have an abbreviated list which I believe they can fax you even if you choose some-one else in the long run. Just a thought.

Cheers,

Jeff Gray

Gary Pegg is a taxidermist whom also can accept trophies under quarantine.

If it is listed under CITES then you won't get it in. eg Leopard and Elephant Ivory. Warthog are fine. They are simply worried about the ivory as they don't know the difference.

It is easier and cheaper to get pelts in if they have been tanned in Africa and the Taxidermy studio should be able to provide a Veterinary Certificate saying they have been tanned properly. Same with shoulder mounts if done in RSA.

I have no knowledge of wet hides.

My Cape Buffalo and Hyena are being mounted in Zim this time so I will see how this goes.

Last time We had our stuff pre tanned in Zim and mounted here.

There are different classes of CITES animals.

Class 1 are prohibited imports.

Class 2 SHOULD be OK if accompanied by a CITES permit.

Elephant is on CITES 2, but under the Hawke Labor gov't they were made a "special" prohibited exception and all elephant products banned from import into Australia.

Wet hides are not acceptable I believe.

Taxidermy studios are able to organise "dip and pack" services to provide what is required for Aust imports.

A good idea is to speak to your taxidermist before hand, what is required, and what they need, or need to do, to take delivery of your trophies. You WILL NEED the taxidermists address anyway to put on your African export paperwork.

I believe some of mine had to be "irradiated" when received.

Mine have all been dried and stiff when received.

Some guys have brought back trophies in the plane with them, usually bone, horns and antlers, which need to be "dry", but I have no knowledge about this and any issues or requirements.

This is amazing, they are indeed making it very hard . On the Cites website all names are in latin and impossible to find. One needs to take a day off work to get some sort of an idea.....
Sure there must be a simple list available for hunters what can be bought in and how and what not ?

cheers
Pete

Try this link

http://www.environment.gov.au/biodiversity/trade-use/lists/cites/pubs/cites.pdf

or same in word

http://www.environment.gov.au/biodiversity/trade-use/lists/cites/pubs/cites.doc

First column is latin, second is usual names. Index at the beginning. Also use the search function.

From this website:
