.... Baikal in .45/70!

Don't really need one, but the price was too good. Second hand but almost completely new.

Don't have it in my hands yet, but will soon. Had a look at it at the gunshop while the paperwork is done.

Plan to have a play with it and see how well they work, then decide what to do with it.

It is "agricultural" and quite light. And the reports of the short butt stock are true too. One does have to pull the stock back into the shoulder.

A little bit of fun to play around with.

But a .45/70! (only joking for its fans)


Next thing I will be infesting the internet, trying to say or ask:

"Is the .45/70 the ideal double rifle calibre for African dangerous game hunting?"

I'd be interested to hear how it shoots.

I'd thought about getting one to shoot in the "double" match of BGR (like I really need an excuse to buy another rifle). The Baikals that I've seen appear to be well made and I reckon they represent good value.

Is there any reason why the chambers on that rifle could not be reamed out to 450 NE? I've been told that these rifles have screw adjustable regulation. It could be an inexpensive way for someone to get an inexpensive double rifle for dangerous game.

maybe like for the pedersoli DR the 450 NO.2 is the better deal because of the low pressure.
I would go for the 450 3 1/4 sharps rounds as a fun project. the die set is very cheap and as a nitro round it have 5600 joule muzzle energy with only 200 bar more pressure than 45/70.

I hope you have more luck with yours than the one I know of.

It was all you said it was and after a bit of use the 1/4 rib started to come away so it went back to the gun shop.

The bloke that this happened to posts on here so I will leave the rest to him.

i have one i think they are not only a lot of fun for the money but have a lot of promise for the foundation for a decent dr i see RBL of connecticut has a sxs dr that looks much like it the cosmetics make the differance. i have 3 other sxs dr,s but dont worry to much about this one. jmoa

Out of curiosity, is it the MP221 Artemida model? That's pretty neat looking. I have been thinking of a Trail Guns Armory SxS in .45-70 with the conversion to .450 3 1/4 after reading a good article on getting it done. They aren't easy to find and I'm not sure i could find this one either.

It may, or may not, be a less expensive route to go. Still like exposed hammers but slick would do if the price was right.

Any new gun is a good gun!

Forgot to add that on the BaikalCanada site the rifle is shown along with an ad for the laser Spine Institute. Ironical, ain't it?

John, That's great news! Finally a double rifle that you can shoot as much as you like and not feel guilty every time you pull the trigger! I picked two up about two years ago in both the 45/70 and the 30-06. For the money, you can't go wrong. Both of mine shoot well, but are a little sticky when opening. I figure more use will likely loosen them up. Here's a couple of pictures of mine (I really think the Remington cases dress them up quite nicely!) Christopher

i have a trails west 45-70 i bought when they came out in the 90s i changed out the two rear sights with a two blade express sight it shoots under 2 inches @ 70 meters you would be happy with one if you like exposed hammers. myself i like them my jp sauer sxs has exposed hammers also which i hunt with often. like i said previosly the baikal 45-70 is a decent dr for the money.

My Brother in law has one in 30-06. It's a double, and it shoots, about all you can expect for the asking price. The triggers are the worst feature, but can probably be worked on. The rear trigger has...literaly... about 3/8" creep.

He could be talked into selling it if anyone is interested.....he likes money more than guns anyway :-)

I still don't have it as we need to obtain a permit to acquire and that can take several weeks for the cops to send out.

I'm more excited about a Mannlicher (ex-mil but sporterised) I acquired than the agricultural Baikal ....

Got to organise suitable ammo or reloading dies, cases etc for the .45/70 too before I can do anything with it when it arrives. Don't know if anyone stocks suitable .45/70 ammo in SA yet.

As for re-chambering these things, I'm not interested in that at all.

Ha ha, I don't think they will get to me. Have to see if I can get some dies and cases etc in hand asap.

Does anyone have any loads which shoot well in these rifles?

In the Remington shells that I mentioned above, I've shot .45-70 Govt. in 405 grain, soft point in mine. Seems to have good groupings out to 50 yards with a muzzle velocity of approximatly 1,330 fps and 1,590 muzzle energy (personally, in comparison to my DR in 30-06, I think the '06 has greater impact and kick!)

ive been shooting 39.2gr. of imr 4198 300gr remington jacketed hollow point bullets @ 1625fps 1.5 inches @ 40 yards. change the recoil pad the original is to punishing.

I was talking to the PH that I hunted Buffalo with in Zim today and I asked him when he was buying his DR as I new he wanted one when he could afford one.
His answer was he no longer wanted one because on his last Ele hunt a client had a WR 500NE double rifle that the saftey wouldn't release and they were 35 feet from an Elephant !!.
He said they had to whack it with a stick to release it !!!.

Congratulations on your new Baikal double.

I bought one last year and started messing with different loads. I shoot a lot of 45-70 with lead cast bullets and am looking forward to working up a load for my double.

I ran 25 rounds of copper jacketed bullets through each barrel to break it in and then started working with a 415 grain flat point round nose lead cast bullet.

When I pulled the triggers on those first lead bullets, I was like a kid at christmas in the toy train store with a no-limit credit card. It's an inexpensive, pedestrian gun but, it's a hoot and I am not worried about banging it up in the woods when I go hunting, or shooting targets, or rogue charging gophers.
