Pitting

On the underside of an old classic double i found considerable pitting (especially below the fore end). What would be the best way to restore this, is welding with MIG and then carefully filing/polishing the only recommended way?
Best Wishes

I wouldn't attempt that with a MIG machine.
TIG would give you the control and shielding you'd want, but you'd need to be concerned with the heat affected zones around your filler/repair.

Have the barrels X-Rayed, multi-pass at different depths, to see how the pits affect the meat of the barrels, also to see in between the ribs for excessive rust/erosion.

Have those barrels been hot-dip blued?

Cheers

The rifle is in its original blue (c 1925), the pits do not appear deep, will use TIG but X ray is out of the question because I do not have the facilities here.

They do have a process of welding now called plasma welding. And as soon as welded you mayput your finger on it and its just warm. You may do some research on that.Or someone here might know the
information on it.And post for everyone to see. I do have a German Mauser sporter that I bought
from a fellow in or involved with NASA.And 3 side mount scope mount hole had been welded shut
the bead ? or filler is still on the rifle. And except for exactly where the weld filler is.There was no bluing damage at all.??? Whitey
