Zim Elephant Kills Motswana 'Poacher'

A Motswana man was last week trampled to death by a raging elephant at Maitengwe in Bulilima district in Zimbabwe, police have said.
The deceased was part of a four-man gang suspected to be on a poaching mission in Zimbabwe.
A police spokesman for Matabeleland south province, inspector Alfred Zvenyika said four men from Sepako village in Nata area of Botswana allegedly crossed the border into Zimbabwe illegally some time last week on a poaching escapade.
He identified the deceased as Fanyana Tsibile, whose decomposing body was found covered by a heap of tree branches. Elephants, by their nature, cover their victims with tree branches. Zvenyika said that while the four men were hunting, they came across a herd of elephants. One of the beasts charged at the terrified hunters, who took to their heels but Tsibile was not fast enough.
According to Inspector Zvenyika, Tsibile's alleged accomplices escaped unhurt after they sped home across the border. "When the survivors arrived home in Botswana, they took five days before reporting the elephant attack on the deceased to either his relatives or the police.
They only reported to the police after the deceased's relatives had asked his whereabouts," Zvenyika said. The Botswana police contacted their Zimbabwean counterparts and the three poaching suspects were brought back to Maitengwe to the scene of the tragedy. The trio was subsequently arrested and are expected to appear in a Zimbabwe court soon to answer charges of border jumping and poaching.
The Maitengwe area is rich in game because it is a Communal Area Management Programme for Indigenous Resources (CAMPFIRE) area. CAMPFIRE is a concept where rural communities engage in projects to manage their natural resources for their own benefit. Most communities use the concept to take care of their wildlife resources.

Poachers Shot Dead in Kasese

TWO people were shot dead and another injured following a poaching attempt in Longoma area of Rwenzori Mountains National Park (RMNP) in Kyarumba sub-county.
The incident took place over the weekend.
Kasese Police CID chief Joseph Kato said on Tuesday he had not received any information about the incident.
Kyarumba sub-county chairman Yokonia Mbahimba named the victims as Baluku Kayanda and Masereka Iberegha both armed vigilantees from Kabingo village in Kyarumba sub-county.
Mbahimba, who visited the scene said the third victim who was injured is a game ranger in the RMNP.
Kabingo village chairman Doviko Kyakora said a group of people had gone poaching in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park.
Baluku Kayanda an armed vigilante, was suspected to be a member of the group and was shot dead by a game ranger.
Kyakora told The New Vision that on the following day another vigilante, Masereka Iberegha, suspected to have been a member of the group stealthily went to the scene where her colleague (Baluku Kayanda) was lying dead.
She reportedly had the intention of removing the gun from the dead body.
"As Iberegha struggled with the dead body to remove the gun, the game ranger shot her and she died instantly," Kyakora said.
He said Baluku Kayanda and Masereka Iberegha were buried three days after the incident at Kabingo village in Kyarumba sub-county.
However, Kyakora warned the residents against poaching saying they might meet death in the same way.

Four Suspected Poachers Nabbed in Kruger Park

Four suspected members of a commercial poaching racket in the world famous Kruger National Park have been arrested, announced park spokesman Raymond Travers on Tuesday.
Three months of investigation by Kruger rangers and members of the South African National Parks' corporate investigation service (CIS) led to the arrests in the Stoltznek area near Pretoriuskop rest camp on Sunday night.
"After we were satisfied that we knew their modus operandi, we waited for the ideal time to apprehend the suspects," said Stoltznek area ranger Mr Rob Thomson, whose team has kept an eye on the suspects since November last year.
The investigators watched the group's activities from observation posts on high ground in the Mojolospruit area of the southern Kruger.
On Sunday night, team lay in wait for the suspects.
They didn't have to wait too long as a bakkie-load of poached carcasses soon pulled up.
The team confronted the suspects, two of whom managed to flee on foot. Four others, including the alleged leader, were arrested.
Thomson and his team confiscated the bakkie, six firearms, which included two .22 rifles, one .303 rifle, a shotgun and two 9mm pistols, as well as spare ammunition for all the firearms, a cellular telephone and various knives, pangas and axes.
The carcasses in the bakkie included one male impala, five female impalas, one week-old kudu calf and two duikers. The animals had been hunted for their meat.
The suspects will appear in court soon on charges of trespassing, illegal hunting in a national park, bringing weapons into a national park without a permit, removing animals from a national park without the necessary permits and possession of wild animals without a permit.

When I hunted in Southern Africa in 1994 we ran into poachers on all properties which I visited.
I hunted on Chipisi, Sondelani and Bubiana in the West Nicholson area. On Chipisi we chased a poacher in our baccie but we "leaped"  the boundary fence and got away. On Sondelani a game guard shot a poacher. On Bubiana we they have (had ??) white and black rhino (30) plus elephant they apprehended a poacher.
In Zambia I stayed on a farm on the Northern banks of the Zambezi and the army had been in the area for "manouvres" just previously and liberated the tusks from five elephants.
This last trip in the Matetsi Safari area everyday the trackers found game snares and on two days a dead buck in a snare.
Its a BIG problem when people are hungry and also a HARD problem when the legal system has fallen apart and the rule of law no longer exists.
So if an elephant stomps a poacher, at least in one instance nature has taken some revenge.
