Hello Folks,
Do any of you know of any good reasons to choose one over the other, in a strong action?

Depends on what you mean by "strong action". If you mean strong enough to load the 45-70 to the same pressures as a 405 then they can get similar velocities for the same bullet weight. If you can load to even higher pressures then you can do a bit better. To me, the 405 is an "elegant" cartridge; being it was an early big bore designed for smokeless powder. What you give up to it when comparing to the 45-70 is cheaper, more available brass and a gigantic bullet selection. There are not very many .411" bullets out there, you could size down 416s to get better variety. I like the 405, I had a custom high wall built in that caliber a few years ago.

Given the proper twist in either and identical actions the .405 would top out around 400gr. with descent speeds, while the .45/70 would do 480gr. to 500gr. at about the same speeds.
There would be little to prefer in one over the other, although I'd rather have a .405 in an 16" to 18" twist, just because. (I've had quite a few .45/70's or equivalents, time for something new)

I have a 13" twist Dan Lija SSTL barrel (30") in 405 win (or 40-72 BP) (for a Browning 1885 BPCR) shooting the 430 paul jones/Dan Theodore designed postel style bullet and it outshoots the 45-70 out to 1000 yards.
Pulled it off after 500 rounds as I dont shoot long range anymore and it's sitting gathering dust along with 450 pieces of hornady brass if someone needs it.

6mmint - The .405 outshoots (trajectory & wind drift) the .45/70 with Black Powder loads - possibly.
I'd have to see it to believe the .405 is superior when both are loaded to modern pressures with cast or jacketed bullets.
