I have an interesting story. Here’s how it was told to me;

As many of you know, the German people were often disarmed at the end of WW 2. There was a US Master Sergeant in Germany in some town where weapons of all kinds were piled up for destruction. He took 2 very nice drillings to ship back to the USA out of that pile with the permission of his commanding officer.

He took the 2 drillings apart and put them in a duffle bag and shipped them back to New York to his brother. His brother took the 2 forward parts and the 2 rear parts out of the duffle bag when he got them, and shipped them to Iowa to another brother. When they got to Iowa, the 3rd brother took them and paired them up in feed bags. He kept them for many years that way. The brother came to see him a few years later, and one feed sack was given to him, which returned to N, Y. with him. That brother moved to Florida in 1966, where he died.

The brother that lived in Iowa kept his sack and when he got sick he gave it to a friend. The Iowa brother later dies too.

That friend gave me the drillings parts asking me if I could “put them together”. It was only then that we found that the 2 guns were mismatched. In other words, drilling #1 has drilling #2s barrels, and the brother that moved to Florida had drilling#2s stock and receiver, but drilling #1s barrels.

So the 2 halves DON’T fit together.

Now the 2 halves have been abandoned by the friend. I have them now.

So……..
If anyone out there likes drillings and wants to rebuild a set of barrels, I will sell you the receiver and stock for a good price.

Or if there is any interest in the barrels of the other gun, to be used as parts, let me know also.

The right barrel of the one gun is signed EMIL KERNER U SONN
The receiver on the other one has no signature.

The action is the Kerner - Anson and the tube set passed thru the Zella-Mehlis proofhouse in June of 1923???? What are the numbers just above the last 3 numbers just ahead of the flats on the rifled tube?

I suppose you've tried to track down the other pair? If you got hold on those too, you'd end up with two really nice guns!!

I've had such a drilling with two shotgun and one rifled barrel, but ended up selling and getting one with two rifled and one shotgunbarrel underneath. Better suited to big game hunting in my opinion. I do sometimes regret selling the other one, but the new one was a bit too expensive.

Germany has a very rich hunting culture, and the well situated landowners and managers often purchased these kind of guns for mixed hunting in the forest.
They're not really good for anything, but does a decent job on most hunting.

A pretty good compromise none the less! Lovely guns to own and use. The 16 and 20 ga are very well balanced. The 12 ga tend to be a bit too heavy with too much weight forward in the barrels. No need for 12 ga when you have a bullet ready for longer distances anyway.

Yes Bonde, but the parts of the other 2 guns were lost many years ago. One set went to Florida as the story goes. The man that had them died and everything was lost in a government "estate sale".

There combination guns are truly classic. I have always had an appreciation for them, even though I have never owned one.

What a pity! No use in advertising I suppose..? In Norway, with only 5 million people, it would've been easier to track down..

When I look at the recent produced guns, I realize that very little have been invented the last 100 years or so.. Nothing beats a classic when it comes to workmanship.
I'd highly reccomend that you buy a drilling if you get the chance. They are a joy to hunt with.
