anybody have any idea of what calibre and make of rifles the Queen and Pr.Phillip used for their tiger hunts in India,i imagine the guns would be "well up there in class" to suit the people involved of course and rather exy too.

If it is of interest, 18 months ago on was deciding whether to order a Holland or a Purdey double. I visited Purdey and the MD was out at an exhibition and there were no new doubles in the gun room but a young chap was deputising and asked me to wait a moment. He came p and showed me a Purdey double that he had in storage. It was made for HRH Elizabeth II on her coronation and it is her gun, intitials in the gold oval. I don't know if any of her offspring had used it but it looked mint. the calibre was (if memory serves) something like .400-360 ? and the feature I really liked was that apart from the normal iron sights it had a small folding ghost ring at the back. Lovely gun but the downside of that Beesley self opener is the closing, Hell it was tough to shut, best regards, Mike Bailey

I don't know the definitive answer, but
HRH The Duke of Edinburgh has granted Royal Warrants to both Purdey and Holland and Holland, whereas HM The Queen has granted Warrants to Purdey and Gallyon (but not H&H).
I have always had it in the back of my mind that Prince Phillip used Purdey shotguns and H&H rifles, but I don't know if that is true or not.

A lot of bias in that article however against the British. In actual fact the Majarajah's and their ilk did vastly the majority of hunting in India. The "Viceroy's forest" would have been just one very similar to all the royal reserved areas for Indian nobility.

Quote:

To pamper their egos, every tiger shot by the goras was declared as invariably ten-feet long. If the laat sahibs were not good shots, beaters gathered every bird shot and "put them in a flattering pile beside the imperial butts." Imagine a few staggering figures of ‘bags’ — animals killed for pleasure. Bengal civil servant George Yule bagged 500 tigers in 28 years, Maharaja of Surguja killed 1710, Duke of Windsor shot 17 tigers in one week in 1921, while two were shot later during the visit of Queen Elizabeth to Ranthambhor in 1961. The Cooch Behar Maharaja alone bagged 365 tigers, 311 leopards, 438 buffaloes and 207 rhinos.

A little bit of modern India trying to re-write its own history.

Interesting reading however.

If you do a google image search for "tiger hunt queen" without the quotes, there is a fun photo that won't post here for some reason. Liz looks as prim and proper as ever....probably had extra ammo in her purse. If one searches for "tiger hunt prince", there is a nice shot of Edward in 1921 as well. Neither photo will post here for some reason.

John

I have the records of what King george used for his royal hunt.

I dont remember it but do know it was different from QE and the Duke.

Next time I go to India, i shall look up the old archives and post here if members are interested.
