Mpofu - what are karkar?

Mpofu

You mentioned in the African forum - hunting karkar in "Corbett's country" in the Himalayan foothills.

What exactly are they? - Tahr, some form of mountain goat or antelope?

Thanks

Gryph

I did read it and remember reading it - in tha last month - then went back to confirm and couldn't find the paragraph again. I know it is near the front of "The Temple Tiger" and probably is in "Jungle Lore" as well. Not sure if I have a copy of "Jungle Lore" - it is lost somewhere

Mpofu

Sorry I never saw the replies to this post. Saw them a few days ago but couldn't get back to it.

Right. Found the copy of The Temple Tiger. I had lost even that.

My guess is kakar are hog deer ????

They run off barking down hill etc - maybe the connection to your "dog" comment ???

Thanks for that Gryphon and Mpofu. Gryph - I was going to post your answer but did not get around to it in time.

Didn't think of Muntjac at all.

And you don't have to go to India or Asia to hunt them either. They are spreading like rabbits in most of central and southern England after being introduced here last centuary...

Pete
