Banded or not Banded Front Sight be British style?
      #166739 - 24/08/10 01:41 PM

To have a Pre-War British styled rifle, would a banded or non banded front sight be more period "correct"?

It would be on a 7x57 with a 24" or 25" barrel and about a .550 muzzle diamiter.

With a banded rear sight base and 2 folding and one standing leaves.

Sort of a generic old British style rifle. Not a replica of a particular maker but the general
look of the era.

Or were they made commonly both ways?

Two reasons I ask 1, is I wonder if the non banded would look a little less bulky on a slim 7x57
and 2, I cant find a banded front sight with a strait ramp and an inside diameter .550.

But, NECG does have one that is not banded but with the strait ramp.

I would like to be as period "correct" as possible.

Allen

Depends on the "maker" to some extent.
Many are in fact banded but flush with the barrel surface such as Jeffery commonly did. My William Evans is similar too.
Many "British" bolt guns were simply TypeA Mausers. Most with round barrels had barrel band front sights which are a larger diameter than the barrel, so they are generally more pronounced. I think Holland had a more pronounced band too.
Then, sometimes the front sight was simply soldered on to the barrel without a band - Gibbs and Westley Richards come to mind.
I suspect that any of the best makers would have fit a band if it was requested of them.

Regardless of what you use for a sight, you absolutely MUST mark the barrel with caliber designation ".275 Rigby" not "7x57 Mauser". You will thank yourself every time you look at it!

The .275Rigby were mostly made with solded-on frontsight. It makes the gun look trimmer and with a 6" forearm. The eye for the sling were also solded.
In order to get everything right, study pictures of the early british sportingrifles. See their barrelcontours, placement of sights, drop(pitch) of the combs etc. Its all these thngs together that desides the final outcome, for doing a historical re-creation of a classic rifle.
Today, too many gunsmiths trying to make these type guns doesn`t see all these details and the results looks like poor efforts. The stock is too thick, and actually too nice to. Most of these sportingrifles had a good standard straight grain walnut, and nothing else.

abosely, which war? I have a pre-WW1 mauser actioned rifle without barrel band. It looks classic, but I have nothing against a barrel band. On a 275Rigby I think a front sight without a band would look very nice.

There are some photos of my H&H 375H&H in the Mauser Photos board.

Cheers, Chris
