Ruger #1 trade?
      #166457 - 19/08/10 08:06 AM

Hi Fellows,

I'm thinking about selling my Ruger #1H 458 Win Mag and Ruger #1H 375 H&H in order to raise enough money to purchase a Ruger #1 Medium Sporter in 45-70. The problem is, I have no idea how much I should ask for them. Both are in very nice condition, except for a couple of nicks on the fore ends. They got there from me foolishly trying to shoot the guns from a bench rest, from which they jumped and contacted the metal of the front rest.

Anyway, can you guys give me any guidance? Thanks.

I can check when I'm home this weekend, but they're not collector's items. They were purchased new in the late 90's.

In last years Blue Book (29th ed) they list the #1H at $875 for 100% and $525 for 95%.
Hope that it's some help.

Hello,

The 458 has been discontinued from the line.
I purchased mine for $750 new in the box.
I see them at gun shows from $600 ~ 900
Last reatail price in the US was $ 1049.00
That is the skinny on the 1H regardless of caliber.

Hope that helps.

Why don't you just download the 458 to 45-70 levels? They have the same bore dia. and use the same bullets.

My 458 Win Mag No. 1H weighs 9 1/2 pounds and the 45-70 Medium Sporter is advertised at 7 1/4 pounds.

If you don't have one located I saw a nice 45-70 #1 sporter at Trail Creek Trade in St. Ann, Missouri for $829.00 on the rack. Their number is 314-739-0399. Greg or Tim can help. I know they have a website but haven't been on it. It may be listed there.

Might be easier and cheaper to re-barrel the 458 to 45-70

"Might be easier and cheaper to re-barrel the 458 to 45-70"

I've got a #1 45-70 barrel you can have for $60.00. I've had it more than 20 years and just dug it out of a cabinet when I saw this post. It had been perfect the last time I looked at but now it's got/had a few spots of surface rust on the exterior. I rubbed them off with some Remoil and a plastic cleaning tool. Dern SC humidity!! The rear sight is missing, but otherwise in fine shape.

There ya go Tatume....perfect answer.

Easy, cheap and made to order.
You can get an extractor from Ruger for the 45-70, or just cut the one in the 458 to fit.
Install the sighs of your choice, re-blue, and you have it made.

What a wonderfully descriptive phrase! A great title for a book about double rifles!
