Most common Nitro Express cartridges in use today?
      #16600 - 12/07/04 11:28 AM

I want to do a little bit of a poll. Please post your answers as replies rather than me setting up a poll. What your opinion is AND also what you own and USE a lot or a little.

What are the most common Nitro Express and/or classic cartridges in use today?

Thanks for any assistance.

*****

Obviously the .470 NE is going to be top, but which ones in the .450s, the .400s, above the .450s, medium calibres etc?

I hunt with a 450 No2, a 450/400 3 1/4", and a 9,3x74R.
I think I want a 577 Nitro.

I think next to the 470 would come the 9.3x74R. Then the 400 Jeffery. 450 3 1/4. 450#2. 450/400 3 1/4. 500 NE. .577NE

Do I win anything?

Oh, what I use. Mostly the 9.3, then the 450 3 1/4. Playing with a 450/400 3 1/4 and a .303.

I myself use the .450 No.2 but don't feel it is that common. Unless others think it a lot different. I think only Bertram makes the cases except maybe now Horneber.

Soon to use the 9.3x74mm Rimmed. Not NE but in the same class.

Mickeys and NE450No2 lists are good. I would add the .375 Flanged.

Everyone/Anyone,

Keep them coming. I am seriously researching which calibres are the more common.

I only have a .470 and would suspect this caliber is by far the most common today. I suppose we can thank Federal for that though the many other fine calibers, particularly the 450 No2, would enjoy a boom in popularity if commerically produced ammo was introduced to the market. Even though most double rifle enthusiasts reload, the market for many of the newer guns, as well as first time buyers, seems to be influenced by the ready availability of Federal .470 ammo.

My most used NE cartridge in the hunting field (by far) is the .400 Jeffery (.450/.400 3-inch). The .577 x 2 3/4 takes second place. A distant third these days are a couple of 'nitro-for-black' loadings, the 20-bore/.577 Express, and the .500/.450 x 3 1/4 Magnum Express.

For bolt-guns, the 6.5 Mannlicher-Schoenauer is ahead by a fair margin, followed by .416 Taylor, .303, and a wildcat .375. Do these count?

For me the 400-350 gets the most use for all round stuff with a 250 gn for pigs and 310gn for bulls.
Also of course there's the 470.
Then there is the latest toy which I've called the "Big Stick" whose details are still secret at this stage!

It is my opinion that, in a double rifle, the 470NE is the most sought after chambering for African hunting, and in older rifles one pays a premium for a double so chambered! As stated, the fact that good factory ammo is responcible for that choice more than effeciency. Any of the .458 dia NE rounds will do anything the 470 NE will.

However, I believe the most commonly used chambering in a double rifle, world wide, would be the 9.3X74R,followed closely by the 7X65R, especially in Europe.

I use a 500/450NE most often in Africa, though I have other suitable big bore doubles for the big five. Lately, in the USA, my favorite rifle has become a little 8 lb 9.3X74R double rifle, and it will go to Africa the next time I go there. Here in the states, I rarly use anything else!

My choice of chamberings, if I had to cover everything,with doubles, they would be a 500NE, a 450#2, a 450/400NE 3", a 375 H&H flanged, a 9.3X74R, and a little 16" barreled 30-30 Win with a single selective trigger.

NitroX,
It depends on how you define nitro express. It would have to be a British cartridge or adaptation of an existing non-British cartridge. If you mean an updated black powder express you are ruling out all the rounds that were never loaded with black powder. This would greatly reduce the possible answers. Also, do you include belted and rimless cartridges? Big bore only, or all bores?

Assuming that you are including all the above, the most common could be the 275 Rigby Rimless Nitro Express (AKA 7x57 Mauser). Another possibility is the 303 British. In larger bores the obvious choice would be the 375 H&H Belted Rimless Nitro Express.

If you refer to only large bore rimmed cartridges my guess would be the 470 NE (if you include modern firearms), and possibly 450/400 NE (3 or 3.25) or 450x3.25 NE.

The cals that I personally own and use include 256 Mannlicher, 275 Rigby, 280 Ross Rimless Nitro Express , 300 Belted Rimless Magnum (H&H) NE, 303 British, 333 Jeffery Rimless NE, 350 Rigby Magnum Rimless NE, 375x2.25 Rimless NE, 375x2.5 Flanged NE, 375 H&H Magnum Belted Rimless NE, 450/400 3" Flanged NE, 416 Rigby Rimless NE, 404 Jeffery Rimless NE, 450 3.25" Flanged NE , 470 Flanged NE (actually got rid of my 470 recently).

Of the above, my most used cals are 375 H&H (both vintage and modern rifles), 375x2.5 Flanged, 280 Ross, 303, and 450/400 3" (in that approximate order). I have vintage rifles in all these cals that are still extremely accurate, and as useful today as when they were produced. There is just something a little more satisfying about hunting with one of these old rifles than one of my modern scope-sighted rifles!!!!

Very interesting post . How about some photos of your rifles guys?

Jim

edited: I guess that I should have limited the choices to double rifle calibers (dumb me ). That being the case, I use 375x2.5 Flanged NE, 450/400 3" NE, 450x3.25 Nitro for BPE, and 9.3x80R (not a NE, but in the same category).

No doubt the older english doubles are found in a wide variety of calibers. The nature of the question about what is more common seems very appropriate for that portion of the guns in use. That said, I think you might find a different answer if you polled the modern day manuafactuers of doubles to see what is the most common caliber ordered by their customers. Whatever the answer is to the question about classic doubles, might the ultimate answer across the board be changing as the newer guns being manufactured possibly go in a different direction?

We just hosted the Inaugural NT Big Game Rifle Championships in Darwin, and there were 9 doubles in the gunrack. No two were the same chambering! Only one was a 'modern' rifle, a Kreighoff chambered for the 9.3 x 74 cartridge.

The rest were all Brit, namely:

H&H Royal SLE in .375 Flanged Magnum,
Jeffery BLE in .400 3-inch,
Rigby boxlock in .350 Rigby,
Greener boxlock in .577 x 2 3/4 Light Nitro,
Tolley TLH in .500/.450 x 3 1/4 Magnum Express,
Rosier ULH snap-action .500 Express,
Webley & Scott BLE in .32-40,
Tolley sidelock in .500/.450 N0.1 Express.

What does this tell you?

There were plenty of interesting bolt-guns too, including a 10.75 x 68 Mannlicher Schoenauer and a 1903 6.5, a Rigby .275, a Westley Richards .275, a Savage 99 take-down in .22 Hi-power, and a Scheiring break-open single-shot in 7 x 65 R (plus the usual .338s, .375s, .416s and .458s).

Needless to say, a good time was had by all!

Here's some of the hardware:

Sorry mate, thought of giving you a heads-up, but I knew you didn't have the .416 delivered yet. I have made up a list of interested players for the next one, you're on it!
BTW, we will be running one on Saturday 4th Sept (pm) I believe, nowhere near as competitive as the shoot last Saturday, just good fun! Graeme left one of his books to be presented as the trophy for 'best and fairest' on the day! I'll let you know the program closer to the date.

bonanza

don't have a list. This is supposed to be a survey of what people have and use.

My guess is along the lines of:

.470 NE
9.3x74R
.450/.400 3"
.450 3 1/4"
.450 No.2
.375 Flanged Magnum

I recon it is the most used calibers Worldwide you're interested in?

I think John is pretty cloe to "the right" answer, with a little adjustment..:

9.3x74R - since A Lot of rifles has been made in this chambering for a long time in europe. The 9,3mm (x74R in break open rifles) has been the standard for driven boar hunts, and for moose and red-deer, among "well situated" hunters for decades.
.470 NE
.450/.400 3" (I still think there are more .470 around than .400s, due to more beeing made in recent years)
.375 H&H Mag belted..
.450 3 1/4"
.450 No.2
.375 Flanged Magnum
