Australia & New Zealand Hunting : Australia: The Camel cull
on 2010/8/23 14:34:24

The Northern Territory Government has defended the culling of feral camels, in the face of claims that more humane control methods are being ignored.

Since January, 2,000 camels have been shot or mustered in the Simpson Desert under the National Feral Camel Management Plan.

NT Environment Minister Karl Hampton says the Government is on track to cull 60,000 camels by July next year.

He says culling makes the most economic sense
"The Northern Territory Government, some time ago, did provide $2 million directly to industry, but what we found was that that was not viable," he says.

"There needs to be a lot of work done and certainly the Northern Territory Government is committed to working towards further looking at those opportunities

Ben,Ihave to agree, great to see open sights being used.
I took my Mauser 6.5X54K and my Rigby 303 out to the paddock yesterday for a few shots and thourghly enjoyed myself.
Both rifles are only fitted with open sights.

Gday Guys,

The #1 wears XS ghost rings and the RSM has the standard express sights with an enlarged bead, both rifles are 458 Lott's actually dont own a scope, always used iron sights.

Thank you

We do eat a little camel, but mostly we are culling a highly-destructive introduced species, and the terrain combined with the heat and the vast numbers of targeted animals usually precludes much meat recovery. It is more important to serve the interests of the desert environment and native wildlife than to worry about the utilisation of the meat of feral game. In some areas, at some times, some pet meat is recovered, as well as some for human consumption; whilst this is indeed good, if we were to only shoot these animals in areas where recovery is logistically possible, we would have a far greater environmental disaster on our hands than what we already have. In other words, recreational shooters and hunters play a huge role in managing feral animal populations.

By the way, the right meat from a younger camel is delicious; donkey meat was (is?) used by cattle station people occasionally in the unlikely event that they could not find a killer for beef.
