Bullet Diameter Question for 9 x 56 MS

Good Morning all,

I have been researching the 9x56 MS and the 9 x 57 Mauser.

The 1920 - 1930 era catalogues show the 9 x 56 MS as having a .354" bullet diameter, and the 9 x 57 Mauser as having a .356" bullet diameter.

Has anybody noticed this with slugging your barrels? What bullets do you use in the 9 x 56 MS?
If the need is there, I could swage some 245 grain bullets at .354" diameter, likewise .356" diameter for the Mauser version. If anyone has seen an original bullet, is there a concave section at the base to help it obdturate well and truly into the bore?

I very much want to produce new factory ammo with everything from headstamp, good quality brass and a correct bullet present. The brass costs a fair penny, so I will also convert some cheaper brass for day to day use.

BTW, Which importer might be interested in this type of ammunition, and do you have an importer who would be interested in bringing in North Fork bullets?

it would not surprise you that there is a law in germany, telling you how big the diameter of bullets have to be!
for the 9x56 MS and the 9x57M maximum bullet diameter is 9.08mm. that means it can also be smaller than 9,08mm
my own M 88 in 9x57 have a 9.09 mm barrel and like .357 revolver bullets very much

Mine slugs at .358" which is pretty handy as ordinary unmodified .35" caliber bullets fit, Being in the 200 / 250 grain size range, they shoot to the original sights point of aim. If your bore is .354 or .356, (it seems all 3 size are encountered and perhaps others), you could look at getting a swaging die to reduce the diameter of .35" caliber bullets.

I slugged my 9x57 CG Haenel and it measures at .358 as well. I haven't loaded cartridges yet to determine if the neck will handle the .358 bullet yet. More to come.

I have two of them in stutzen and no stutzen configuration in 9x56 and slugging them it give .353.
So I swagged some .358 diam hornady bullets and they shot very well.

88 Mau - if you shoot a light, 100gr. to 125gr. 9mm or .357" pistol bullet out of the rifle at a descent velocity to get the neck in a fired, fully expanded form, trying a 250gr. Hornady in the neck for slip fit, will show if they are safe to load and shoot. If the bullet fits easily in the fired neck, they're OK.

I suggested the light pistol bullet as they have soft jackets and will not produce excessively high pressures, even if the bullet is too big for the chamber's neck. Something like Varget should allow a case full or close to it. A pressure around 40,000cup might be necessary to get full expansion of the neck. Annealing a case neck first would allow a lighter load to do the job.

I'm playing with my 9X56 with the following results: I am up to slightly over 46 grains of Varget with a 180 grain Sierra jacketed pistol bullet, which is slightly over what Sierra recommends for a .358 Winchester with this bullet. The bullet mikes between .356" and .3565". The bore cerrosafes at .3575".

A 225 grain Speer (.3575") will slip into the fired case, but I only had the one, so I haven't tried a load with them. That would be my next step.

I am getting around 1.5" groups at 100 yards with the 180 grain bullet using the somewhat primitive Nickel 1-4X variable scope, which has a reticle which is enlarged with the increase in magnification, like in the early B&L variables.

It has the "running game" reticle, consisting of a pointed picket post, surrounded by a circle and crosshair. The circle has something to do with establishing the lead on running game, I believe.

Not too easy to get a reliable sight picture, but I'm working on it.

Right now, I'm to the point that I would feel safe going hunting with the load, but I think I can do better.

So, the barrels slug anywhere from .353" up to .358".

I will look into getting some pure copper and lead 245 grain bullets made aaat .358" and others made at .356". Then I cna get some swaging dies for the old Corbin to adjust diameter for any of the various bore sizes. The brass and the powder charge should be the same, except having to open the brass mouth more or less to fit the various bullets in.

Hawk bullets in the US might be able to help. There wa a nice fellow in Bavaria, where my family originates. He had all the sizes, but like us all eventually he died a while back.

The 245 grain bullets are the good killers for hunting medium game, and hitting to line of the sights.
