Great pics, John. I really think safaris have lost something since they stopped using those old tents. The permanent ones erected up on purpose-made floors are too decadent altogether.

Ben and Paul,

I have access to some of the details of these photos. But am trying to get Shimba to join and join in himself. He is, I believe the young lad in some of the photos, and his Father is also in some of the photos.

Lots more to come. Shimba gave me access to his online photo album, and I will post more pages in lots.

Hopefully we get some members posting and interested and Shimba can join in.

Myself, I love these old photos, from the early 1970's is my guess, or the late sixties, the days when hunting was still permitted in Kenya.

PS If stories can accompany some of the photos, I intend to re-edit some new permanent ezine posts, maybe as a tribute to Shimba's Dad.

Paul - Right! let's go back to them golden days of no tent floor, no showers (5-gal bucket & mototo to pour it), bugs with attitudes, and snakes. My last safari (Johan Calitz) in 2008 had tents with floors, bathrooms, running salty water, large bugs living in my mattress, 3XL spider on the wall, and sheets that could substitute for Level III body armor.

None of that sissy "lodge" stuff for me. I'm man enough to enjoy spider bites.

Reason the old safaris didn't have tents with floors is the same reason my first safari communicated with base camp with a low wave radio sporting a 100-ft. antenna.

sat phones
well-built tents
h&c running water
bottled water
safari trucks that don't break down
Lufthansa 747 transportation
.458 Lott with Leupold - under $1200

Hell yes, bring 'em on! You rough it and call me and let me know how it was. (ooops - you won't have a phone)

Shimba Khan? Wonderful photos!

Safari? Isnt that the term for hunting using a travelling camp rather than a permanent fixed camp?

John,

Wonderful pictures from a time when a "Safari" was truly an adventure based journey. I hope that you can get Shimba Khan to join the forum and relate details of the people, the hunts and the game from that bygone era.

Well Done,

Jeff Gray

There is such a big difference in how trophy pictures were taken then to how they are arranged now. The first Eland and the Impala are both showing shots behind the ribcage with the Eland also having one in the hind leg. All very honest stuff without the posing and repositioning that hapens now. Great set of pic's John and hope to see more.

Hi John

Great Photos!

Is Shimba the child through many of the photos, and again as young adult?

Do you know what country they are in?

Yes Shimba is the boy in many of the photographs.

The photos were taken in Kenya.

I like that these photos both show a period and also part of hunting in East Africa we don't often see or hear about. Sometimes when reading books written by European ex-pats hunting by Indian residents is referred to. But usually little more. But here we see some of the excellent hunting adventures of the period.

In addition occasionally we see photos of the "Rajahs" of India whom all almost without exception went on East African safaris. It would be great if their photo albums could also be sourced, preserved, displayed and enjoyed as well.

I think it is really cool to see these vintage photos and also a young guy, his father, family and some of their 'family holidays'. His families holidays leave mine for dead that is for sure.

John very impressive and enjoyable photos. Shimba would have some excellent stories to tell.
Give me the old style camps/safaris I enjoy getting away from the modern world. It is for some a great way to relax even if you are doing it tough.

Poprivet,
sorry if I offended you but, yes, I did find it a fraction tamer than expected. As you indicate, though, these improvements have democratised what was once the real sport of kings.

Actually what has permitted ordinary people to go on safari is air travel and its relative cheapness. Compared to having to allow for months of travel and high cost by steamer.

If going on a buffalo hunt cost a man with a job 6 months of a year, out of work, rather than a couple weeks, how many of us would be doing it?

Good thought, John. In the early '70s it still took about six weeks to sail to England. One of my mates went on a ship full of Italian girls and managed to take many trophies without even getting off the ship.

I need to chime in too - great photos! I especially like the photo of the bongo with the chap dressed in a maroon sweater, collard shirt, khaki slacks and loafers with Shimba wearing the Michael Jackson look alike outfit - vintage early 70s - love it! I wish I knew the back story...

This is a fantastic thread.

I always enjoy seeing photographs from that period in Africa, espcially since they are often more candid, rather than being set up and arranged.

I certainly hope Mr. Khan will join in and tell us more details about the safari adventures he was able to experience during his youth.

Erik,

Make sure you keep lots of photos of your hunts of moose and other game in Norway too. Those family outings and with friends in your team will also one day be "vintage" and a wonderful resource and memories.

I will help in a small way with my own photos and story. I know I am hopeless and still haven't put it up.

But while not as 'exotic' to you as East Africa 30 or more years ago, they are also special times.
