Would any Argentinian Member Know this Gentleman?

Dr Osvaldo Gatto seems to build some very nice muzzleloading guns. He also has a following in France as I learned from a French forum - maybe some of our French members are familiar with his work?

Good hunting, everyone!

I saw his muskets many years ago and looks very good.
I do not remember much as I did know much about historical precition then.
I hear very good things about him.
hope this helps.
If I can help you, let me know.
Martin

Thank you, Martin. Yes, any information on Dr Gatto's guns would be most welcome. I understand that he makes historically accurate pieces from scratch on a custom basis. I am very curious about his guns and of the historical designs that he tries to replicate.

Thanks and I shall look forward to what you can find.

Good hunting!

I contacted Dr. Gatto a few years back when I was thinking about buying one of his matchlock pistols. He replied saying that he was establishing a U.S. agent, but subsequent emails have gone unanswered so I don't know if anything ever developed in that regard. My interest cooled somewhat as the competitions I shoot in require any replica arm to be authentic to an original design. Despite Dr. Gatto's claim that it was copied from a German pistol I have been unable to find any authentication that such European-made matchlock pistols existed. The one he shows has the lines of a later wheel-lock but with a matchlock installed, all the European matchlock pistols I've been able to find are very eastern in their lines with only a slightly downward angle to the grip, unlike the more conventional pistol grips of later development.
That being said, from the photos on his website, his guns did look to be of better quality/finish than the Indian-made ones that are currently being imported. If anyone has any current information on Dr. Gatto & his offerings I too would be interested to hear their opinions.

Podewils,

What I was told is that some of Dr Gatto's guns have been sold in the USA. I have also been told that he has the originals in his collection and that he bases his builds on them, but I am no expert. I am new to muzzleloading and found these fascinating designs. Their prices (as displayed on his website) are also well within my budget - that is why I was curious. I am not worried about participating in exclusive competition but would definitely like to buy a gun or two a year and shoot it for fun if I could.

Good hunting!

You might want to try for the good doctor at greybeadoutdoors.com look in the black powder cannon and mortar forum under sponsors. I believe that at one time he was a sponsor but have not hear anything recently. Hope this helps. Frank

FrankS,

Thanks, I'll check the Graybeards site out and find out if he has a US distributor. It would not be a problem to import muzzleloaders - except that I live in the State of Ill-Annoy.

My brother built this German Dag - lock stock and barrel.
The stock is ebony - rather difficult to inlet, let alone do silver wire inlay in.

Daryl,

That is incredible work by your brother! Please pass my congratulations on to him.

Does he have a website? And, I doubt that such a master craftsman would make just one fine gun. Do show his work off over here - masterpieces should not be kept hidden!

Thanks again and good hunting!
