SHORT Action Mauser '98

Directed to this forum from Accurate Reloading, it took me a while to realize I had registered here a couple of years ago.

Here is my original question and some information I added in regard to replies at Accurate Reloading.

I did not see the s/n on any piece as I have noticed on military Mausers.

Appeared to have stripper clip guide.

Okay, can someone put a 'worst case' value on the action alone, if I can determine it is a true kurz?

I called and will be able to examine/purchase it tomorrow. IF it passes examination.

You are kind of asking for a lot of speculation here.
Most Kurz actions I have seen for sale - and that's not a lot - are in the $2-3K range.
Should be fairly easy to identify as original or not. Remember, they are all small ring actions except for maybe one or two known.

Is it a square bridge action or a standard round action?
Is it cut for a scope or unaltered?
If it is a rare configuration the value may be much more than the action alone and a shame to split up.
Are you considering it for the action alone?
All I can say is that Kurz Mausers are indeed rare and a good one is hard to come by these days.

Going to look again tomorrow but as I remember:

Round

Drilled for Lichert externally adjustable mount.

Configuration: USA built custom varminter stocked in birdseye maple.

Not going for the action. I'd keep it as is, but valuing it for the action and then I can figure out the rest.

Have never seen or heard of an original Oberndorf in whatever configuration the bolt head fitting a .222 cartridge.

Only a few post war FN standard length actions.

Photos of the action, please!
"V 76" may point to the Mauser factory, as Mauser used a V-prefix serial # for experimental actions.It depends on where it is and how it looks like. V stood for "Versuch" = test or try.

Unless you particularly want a Kurtz Mauser action, you could save a small fortune by choosing a Brno ZKK601 short action (M98 derivative, essentially a small ring size with a grooved 'double square bridge' style receiver available from the factory in .222, .223. .243 and .308 etc).

If you get one with the right size bolt face most of the work will have been done, all that remains is some action smoothing and a trigger job. Should be able to pick up a whole rifle for $650-750... quite a few were imported to Canada I'm told.

From what I could see, using the advice and information from the folks here and Accurate Reloading. Oh well. A very cool project that someone put together with some very good workmanship, but not worth the asking price to me at the moment.

That's not a '98 action and certainly not a Kurz.

It's a '93 or '95 - I'm not an expert on the older Mausers. The bolt shroud clearly isn't for a '98:

I'm a little puzzled, Utah...,
did you mean the action was cut and welded to make it short? Also, has one of your pics been reversed to look left-handed?

Yes, close inspection showed signs that led me to think it was welded. One picture was flipped for easier viewing, it is not a lefty.

It's an m93 ,the square bottom of the bolt shows that, the square bottom was discontinued with the next model.

M93 as bolt head , shroud and bolt body without guide rib shows.

So an action heavily modified by shortening and by the way not suited to the pressures of a modern.222 cartridge.

As far as a Short Mauser action (not 98) for .222's? - simply the M527 CZ. Perfectly sized with single set trigger, fully adjustable in both stages and the second most accurate factory rifle made today. Savage is the first in most calibres. The CZ 527 comes in the "Euro Lux", "American" and "Varmint" models.

The action even has the inner shoulder for setting up headspace and for bottoming the threaded barrel against - same as a M98. They are clip fed- 5 round. Most of us shoot them single shot on gophers. Mine are chambered for the .17AH and .22 Hornet.

Comes in .222/.223/.204 and .17Rem., .22 Hornet and 7.62x39 I believe. There was a short run of .221 Fireballs a few years back through CZ USA. It may be out in .17 Fireball now, maybe not. That would be a nice addition to the line, along with a .17AH and .20 Fireball.
