CZ550 Project Continues. “The Stock” Part 3.

CZ550 Project Continues. “The Stock” Part 3.

The stock is now finished and what a wonderful job it is but I guess that any person who has had Ross Waghorn make a stock for them knows just how good a job he does.

To recap an earlier photo, this is the blank as it arrived from Roger Vardy who had selected the blank based on the caliber and the style of stock that I was wanting. We will then show the various steps that Ross took to complete the stock.

Right Side.

Left Side.

The first thing that Ross required to do was to find the center of the blank and inlet the barrel and action.

Then the final shape is created.

Finally the process of “Oil” finishing begins, the following photo was taken with just 1 coat of oil.

Once the 12 Plus coats of “Oil” has been applied allowing each coat to dry naturally with a slight rub back between coats, the final finish is achieved and lastly the checkering is “Cut” and then the “Masters” art is ready for all to see.

In “Part 4” you will see the engraving that Ron Croxon has completed and hopefully you will approve of my selection.

Until next time,

Cheers for now,

Jeff Gray

Can I ask what make the cartridge trap is and if possible could you show us a picture. The Recknagel catalogue has really bad pictures of thier cartridge traps so I have no idea if I want one.

Thanks
George

I have just heard from Ron Croxton, the parts will have the engraving completed by Sunday and the metalwork will then be heading South to Alex Beer for completion.... Howdy Doody... I can't wait...

Cheers,

Jeff Gray

Hi Neale,

Thanks for that and it is good to hear from you again as I have missed your input. I think you will approve of what Ron Croxon has done and hopefully I will post his work on the weekend.

Believe it or not, the "Overseeing" as you put it helps keep the mind active as it is very easy to fall into a don't care attitude and yes, I am looking forward to going for a shot to keep the eye in and hopefully see Africa before the master calls me home.

Cheers Mate,

Jeff

G'Day Fella's,

Yet another stunning work from Ross Waghorn!
It's really unfortunate that if you were to mention this mans name, to your average Australian on the street, they would reply, Who?
Ross Waghorn's talents and skills with best grade firearms, are just something else!
He really is The Master!!!

Thank You for the images Jeff and keep em coming!

Hi Hommer,

When you say:

Quote: "It's really unfortunate that if you were to mention this mans name, to your average Australian on the street, they would reply, Who? Ross Waghorn's talents and skills with best grade firearms, are just something else!"

In a world of automation and CNC cut stocks, it is hard to believe that he makes them truly "By Hand"
and considering he is almost 65 years of age, one must ask when will these talents be lost to the Australian firearm owner.

I am glad that you and the fellow NitroExpress forum members appreciate his art.

Cheers for now,

Jeff Gray

A beautiful stock, Jeff. I'm no expert but that chequering is about as extensive and finely done as any I've ever seen.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for that, he has done a wonderful job, the checkering is 24 L.P.I. which is as about as good as you can get. As Homer said, most people in the street would not know his name with the exception of the "Classic" shooters here on the forum. At almost 65 years of age one must wonder how long he will continue his craft.

Cheers,

Jeff Gray

I think a better question is who and where are the up-comers that will continue the skills? I think in Australia its an 'old man's' game doing work at this level ... its takes years of experience often as a side venture to your daily job, then only in early retirement from their daily jobs do these craftsmen start to reveal themselves.
Cheers...
