1903 Greek Steyr
      #162402 - 20/06/10 08:39 AM

all of this recent mannlicher action has motivated me to post some pic of my very early MS action. I'll be screwing a barrel in shortly. Appear to be a very early Greek with only a few markings on the trigger. Bolt release and safety has checkering. Bolt handle appear to be original but chopped and shaped.

righto I seem to have stuffed up the photo bit, whats the best way to get photo up ?

Beautiful, Pablo! Please do keep the pictures coming. This is, indeed, very refined gun porn at its finest!

The bolt haandle is a welded-on addition. The Original Greek 03 handl had a very big, round, hollowed out knob on a much shorter stem.

Yeah I suspect your right Kudae the bolt would seem to be a imposter, I almost had a weak moment on the weekend at a local gunshow when I had to resist the urge to add a Dutch mannlicher 6.5 x 53R to the collection.

Tee bolt release is also not an original Greek military one. From memory some of the Dutch ones had the checkering but given this one has vertical grooving, its propably from a commercial mannlicher.

As the original commercial bolt releases came without any checkering too, IMHO the checkering was done by the gunsmith who also replaced the bolt handle and removed the clip guide at the front of the receiver bridge.

Actually I bought a military Steyr made in 1911 yesterday. Won't get it for a few weeks.

Hopefully when it is dusted off and polished up ... it looks remotely like this.

It is a 6.5x53mm.

Why? Is it hard or impossible to get brass? Bullets?

6.5x53R.

That's a special piece of walnut, isn't it. 6.5x53R, 6.5x54 - there is lots of brand new brass - something must fit after appropriate modification.

not serious, just a joke about your sloppy cartridge designation
"It is a 6.5x53mm. "

its a 6,5x53R or a 6,5x54

Hi John,
Is the military Steyr a Greek one or a Dutch/Roumanian one?
How original is it?
George

Considering the rifle wasn't even in my hands, nor seen it in real life at the time, and relying just on the selling websites description, "sloppy" cartridge designations wasn't a big concern. Now have it in my hands.

With this type magazine your Mannlicher should be 6,5x54, which is greek mannlichers original caliber.

I have one of each:

6.5x54
6.5x53R

and while I'm at it a:

6.5x55

and a:

6.5x65 on the way ...

Too many 6.5's!

I will post some photos of the two rifles at the top on new separate threads in the future.
