1913 Mauser Oberndorf Model B

My apologies for the late posting here - I had promised to psot these pics some days ago but could not for various reasons. This is the Mauser Model B 1913 model from the Spanish collector who hass sent several pictures of his rifles to be shared vide M. Dorleac.

A description of the rifle again:

Original Mauser Oberndorf 98’ type B made circa 1913.
That rifle remains in a very well preserved condition, retaining at least 90 % of its factory bluing slightly discolored, with a perfect stock and all parts to the same number.
It is fitted with an old Voigtländer 3x Skopar scope on very nice old-fashioned Suhler claw mounts.

G'Day Fella's,

What is it about early sporting bolt action ceterfire rifles, that just "Row My Boat"?
Here is another example (plain as it may be but practical), of an early sporter that I would enjoy owning!

Hello.
This is my first post on this forum. I found you guys by searching the internet for information on a rifle that I recently traded for. From what I can tell, it is almost identical to the one in this post. I was told that it was 8mm though, not 9mm. I would love to get more information on it like when it was made, what it was made for (military, or civilian use), what the value is etc. How would someone go about finding what this gun is worth? If it would help, I can post some pictures. The rifle has some markings on it like a crown with a B under it and another Crown with an 0 under it. I have the scope for it as well and what looks like the original leather scope case and matching leather rifle case. The metal is all in excellent condition. The wood is in Very good condition, although not quite as good as the one in this post. The two digit numbers on the bolt, safety tang, etc all match the last two digits of the larger number on the receiver (serial number I would assume)

Any information or help would be greatly appreciated.

Don,
The "0" with the crown is probably actually a U.
I would suspect that it is an 8X57 which is quite a common chambering in the prewar Oberndorf Mauser sporters.

There are many good books on these guns and it is quite easy to date these guns.
Go ahead and post pictures. These Oberndorf Mausers are all very collectable and desirable especially in original configuration and condition. I am sure many of the Mauser experts will chime in.

I just picked up a well used Model B 30-06 made in 1921 that has been here in Alaska awhile. Like many Alaskan rifles the barrel is chopped to 18 inches and the rifle is well worn but still a solid and serviceable after 90 years of use. It is the second well used Oberndorf sporter I have found up here and I certainly intend to keep it in use.

Finally got around to taking some pictures...
I'm anxious to see what you guys think of this rifle.
The rifle actually came with the scope, leather scope caps, leather scope carrier, and the leather gun case. It all seems to be a matching set.

DeerJerky: Super nice commercial Oberndorf square bridge Type B from 1914 with factory scope mounting. Mausers in this original condition are hard to find. Value is in the $6-8K range. Hang on to this one.

What is with these guys named Don and their Mausers?

What a great gun! Square bridge with the Mauser scope mount system - all there too!
If the bore is as good as the rest of the gun looks, definitely a keeper.

My 8.0N marked Mauser is 8x57J (.318 bore). Check to see if yours is opened up to 8x57S (.323 bore). Just to make sure that you use the correct ammo. in this jewel. I'm pretty sure yours is a .318.

Hey Dons,
I checked the bore with my digital calipers and it said it was .318.
To be honest with you, I don't plan on ever shooting this rifle. I have other rifles that I can shoot. I took it to a well respected gunsmith to have him check out the bore and he said that it looked perfect. He said that it could pass as an unfired bore.

If you don't mind, I would like to ask you a couple more questions.

I would like to preserve this rifle as well as possible. What is the best way to do this? Should I put anything on/in it? I have a very good sealed gun safe with a heating rod in it. Is this a good thing for this rifle?

G'day Jerky,
That is a very nice Mauser, and in its present condition, a real rarity. My suggestion to keep it in good nick is to use a high quality floor wax. Don't put oil anywhere. Put a nice even layer on over a few days and that thing will look great forever. Wood and metal all cop the same treatment. I even strip down mine and cover areas that are out of sight. I must admit that when you pull a waxed gun out of the safe to show soneone,they look dull. But all it takes is a quick buff with a soft cloth and it will sparkle. A friend who collects high end stuff, wheellocks, cased duelling pistols etc, will only wax his firarms and has been doing so for on 60 years. All are still perfect. Try to find a wax that has the least amount of modern additives and you can't go wrong. I use this method on my working guns but do use oil sparingly on the working metal parts of these rifles. Another tip is to store all longarms muzzle down. Any oils that are present will go to the floor instead of into the head of the stock.

If you're just going to put it away, Renaissance Wax is used by a lot of curators and preservationists. It can be used on wood and metal. You can get it online at Amazon or places that handle custom knife accessories. A small tin will last a long time. It doesn't take much.

Well guys, I have decided to sell the Mauser I have shown on this post. I have an opportunity to expand my business and need all the cash I can come up with. Please tell me the best way to sell a nice piece like this. Should I just list it in the classifieds here? Should I put it up on an auction somewhere?

I have used wax since I first heard about it in the 60's. I use plain old Johnson's paste wax for floors. I too strip the gun out of the stock and then rub the wax into the exposed metal and the entire stock. Assemble the gun and then give it another coat so that it seals the area between metal and wood. I have some that still have their origional 50 year old coat on them. Used ot to protect my Winchester levers that I collected and handled rarely. Works well and is easy to replace and cleanup.
