Brumby and Buffalo Cull Hunt
      #159902 - 03/05/10 07:11 PM

I was asked to dent a property's brumby and buffalo population over the weekend. Three brumbies and three buffalo fell to 410-grain Woodleigh soft-noses from the CZ550 in .416 Rigby. The calf was utilised for meat.

The buffalo flies are pretty active; within minutes of the brumby hitting the deck, a little lizard and a little frog had climbed-up the carcass to hunt them.

Yeah, I'd like that, MOG. It'd be good to meet-up and shoot together. Look us up when you come through Katherine.

Hi Ben,

Well done, it must be nice to hunt that sort of game on the "Weekend" as most of us "Plebs" can only dream of such things. Katherine is a lovely town, was at the Gorge when I was a lot younger and went into the main shopping center opposite the art shop just down from the BP garage when I was up there in 2007.

Again well done, keep the pictures coming of the various hunting that you do as it wets an oldies appetite. Glad your giving the CZ a workout, they are a fabulous rifle, I have 2 being customized at the moment, can’t wait.

Cheers for now,

Jeff Gray

Ben you are a lucky bastard(in the nicest possible way). Living in the right area with the contacts and using a CZ 550 in 416Rigby. Unfortunately mine has only taken one small pig- bit of a give me that one-.

Well done.

Thanks, fellows. I do really like my town, despite its faults. It was a dream of mine as a kid, to live somewhere where the game was bigger than the wonderful rabbits I grew-up shooting, trapping and hunting on the farm.

Jeff, although I've always used rifles, I haven't really played-around with them, so I'm fairly new to the wonderful world of tweaking / modifying one's rifle, to the point where changing a recoil pad is a big adventure! I was wondering if you could tell me what a customisation job involves on a CZ rifle? What do you get changed? Cheers.

In my experience of only a handful of rifles, customizing takes two paths.
1) To fix or improve existing faults or design compromises.
2) Personalising your rifle to taste.
Often the two blend together into a unique rifle. Done well and looked after they can add some value to a rifle. If to0 unique, it will make the rifle too specialised to retain value.

Here are few examples of custom work that can be done.

Stocks can be modified to fit you better. Length of pull shortened or lengthened. Weight added or removed. Shape of the pistol grip changed to fit your hand. The action can be bedded (made to fit better) for more consistant accuracy.

Sights can be removed, changed or improved for a better sight picture. Peep and scope sights added. Mounts changed for weight or height. Recknagel and NECG make and sell a variety of options for CZ's.

Pistol grips and floorplates as well as the whole rifle can be engraved for a personal touch or to restore a fond hunting moment/memory

If there is nothing wrong, don't fix it. Look for small improvements if needed.

Hi Ben,

I have to agree with Tophet1 as to what possibly NEEDS to be done as apposed to what the owner WANT’s done as a personal preference.

Most people who own or have owned a CZ550 mostly agree that the action needs to be smoothed, slicked up and to ensure correct feeding with the projectiles that you want to use on the big stuff so that when “Push comes to Shove” you will be able to reload quickly without the possibility of jamming, meaning in the heat of the moment of a charge you can keep firing.

Unless you have experience in this field, I suggest that a qualified gunsmith be used or you can loose a lot of value of the firearm if in-correctly done. I am using another forum member Alex Beer in Tasmania although there are a lot of very competent guys on the mainland, one is Tony Small.

As for the engraving and again as Tophet1 has said is a matter of choice but I am using the same person, Ron Croxon who is also a forum member to do the engraving for me.

If you would like to see what Alex has done so far, have a look at these links.

http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=151868&an=0&page=1#Post151868

I now have the new custom stock in my hands that Ross Waghorn has made for the CZ and I am waiting for the engraving to be finished before it is back to Alex for Rust Blueing which will be by the end of June God willing.

If you have any other question, you can send me a PM

Cheers for now,

Jeff Gray

Hi Kamilaroi,

If you are meaning me, no, I have not been to either Ron or Ross's premises, all done via the mail and phone. You must post pictures for us all to see.

Cheers,

Jeff Gray

Thanks for the information, gents. I am having trouble feeding on one side of the magazine, and will soon be taking it to a gunsmith in Darwin.

Hi Ben,

That's what we mean. Please check out prior to going to the gunsmith that he has done this type of work on the CZ550's before you hand over your rifle. Sorry to be so blunt but there is a lot of Gunshops out there not Gunsmiths.

Cheers,

Jeff Gray

Hey mate,

I have had great success with one Darwin gunsmith, who helped me get my 404 feeding better, his name is Vic Pedersen (spelling) and he has done extensive work on other guns that is first class, I hope this helps.

PS I am coming back in 6 months, I will be based in DWN so a catch up and a few little walks along billabongs sounds like a top idea to me!

Regards,

MOG

Hi Ben,

I know that name and from all reports that I have heard he is first class.

Cheers,

Jeff Gray

Cool! That is good news indeed. Vic is exactly the man I called on the phone, and he said to bring it in when next I'm up, and he was confident that he could help. Thanks, fellows. It is good to have your recommendations.

Ben, I believe Vic Pedersen knows about db rifles, too, having seen his name in Graeme Wright's book - surely a sign he's a serious 'smith.

As hinted at above, you need to really love a rifle before mucking around with it, because, as with a car, subsequent buyers generally prefer them original. Of course a gun or rifle needs to fit you but, if that means you have to shorten the stock, look hard and long at everything else about the firearm and make sure you want to keep it.

I've had a lot of fun sporterising military rifles (two FN Mausers and a Mannlicher Schoenauer) but they were cheap and common in those days and initially I couldn't afford to buy commercial ones. I always retained the original stocks and streamlined them to look like period sporters, complete with hand-chequering. No place for originality really, just an understanding of 'the look'.

It helps to have books to refer to. I started with a book by the Williams sight people called 'How to Convert Military Rifles' (since lent out, never to return), and later got Jim Carmichael's 'Do-it-yourself Gunsmithing', which shows safe projects for the amateur.

Cheers
- Paul
