Fox meets 9,3x62
      #137654 - 20/06/09 09:38 PM

Here a short clip starring a fox that meets a Lapua Mega 285 grain bullet at about 120 meters:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UopjgHEdKvA

Sorry for the rather poor quality but it has to do with some weird format converting during upload.
I shot two more foxes and an injured roe deer fawn at the same evening, but couldn`t manage to film that. This was in January this year. Such successful hunts are very unusual here in my area so I was pretty happy to say the least.

I can't open the youtube due to my antiquated dialup limitations here, but the info is interesting.

Are fox rare in your area?

Also, do you fellows call them in at all, that is, using rabbit squealer calls or anything like that? What is the most common method used to hunt fox?

And, Waidmannsheil Kalunga!

Waidmannsdank Rod ! Maybe You can find the clip searching at youtube for "fox meets 9,3x62".
Foxes are not rare at all here, in fact they are a vermin taking a heavy toll on hares and ground-breeding birds. Even worse is that they carry diseases or parasites like echinococcus multilocularis that may kill You if You get infected with that worm.
Some hunters call them in using hare distress calls or mice calls but I took the three fellows waiting for a roe deer fawn to shoot.
Another common method is baiting using guts from game previously shot or crows, road kills etc.
Some hunters use traps but due to weird laws that dictate a warning sign near the trap this is not advisable in heavy populated areas, most traps will be stolen or destroyed by city-people/bunny huggers.
I love hunting foxes late in the winter when all required roe deer are bagged and I can enjoy the special atmosphere that comes with the cold season.

When I was a kid on the farm in N Dakota, I use to use guts, etc to trap fox in the fall in winter for some extra money. This was before the coyotes showed up..at that time there were quite a few around and price at that time was anywhere from $65 to $100 depending on fur quality and size...

Actually have some in our area now as well here in Montana--have seen them several times just in the past few weeks...

Not sure if you used a big enough gun...seemed like it barely knocked him over...

Thank you for the info..

How hard is it for an OUTSIFER TO HUNT deer in Germany?? Not asking you, just curious...

Yes Art, I too wonder if 9,3x62 is enough gun for foxes..., maybe I should try my .470 the next time.

Concerning hunting roe deer, all I can say is that it is usually not difficult to get one, but to get a certain buck or a smallish fawn is another story. We try to sort out the weaker roe deer but then where I hunt there are not many small antlers to be seen, so the choice is not easy. The hunting authorities tell us how many roe deer we have to shoot, if You shoot more it`s no problem but if You don`t shoot enough You get trouble. Also we have to manage the bagging of deer with the peaks of demand, which is usually just before christmas, so the two weeks before christmas we hunt quite often. Somehow we manage it to get the job done. There are other hunts I like more but hunting roe deer is the "work" part of hunting here.

Have had great successes with the 9.3x62 on a few foxes and also thought It might be a tad light so I did up grade to the 470NE.
The 470NE is most suitable for the Fox..

Hi Folks.
I have a .375 H&H on order fromEmpire Rifles which will be used for some bunnies in Gippsland. I thought this calibre may be satisfactory in the case of a charge

Hi 500 Nitro

http://www.empirerifles.com/

Mauser actioned hunting rifles. The rifles have quite a long wait (18 Months) but the owner George has been very accommodating and patient. I changed my mind many times !
I ordered it about 6 months ago and must admit to becoming very impatient.

The Empire rifles look well built and with 300grn Swift A Frames followed by 350grn Woodleigh FMJ's, you should be set for any Rabbit.

Maybe, but the shrapnel will do a sterling job in anchoring the beast.

I shot a ground squirrel once with the .375H&H - bullet didn't exit, either. Must have been a texas-type gopher.

The 275gr.(cast) bullet hit the dirt about 6" in front of the gopher, cut a groove in the soft dirt up to the gopher then entered low in the abdoment, penetrating up through the 'innards' through the diaphram, one lung and heart then penetrated the spine to lodge under the skin of the back for almost complete penetration. I might add, it dumped all of it's considerable 'energy' inside the animal.

Thus, the .375 Holland and Holland magnum proved to be a bit 'light' if one favours complete penetration with an exit wound for bleeding out the animal.

BTW - the gopher was launched up into the air and landed about 12' back of his mound. I've switched to heavier bullets in the 3/8" bore for these tough animals.

Would a 9.3x62 do as well?

I use my 375 Ackley with 300 grain Swift A-Frames to shoot grey squirrels. If I miss the head and hit the body, there's nothing left but a furry donut.

A furry donut eh !
I ordered a .338 Lapua Magnum Barrett yesterday ( Folks are saying they will be banned in Australia soon) and I reckon furry donuts are a distinct possibility with that !
I'm becoming very concerned for our sport once again unfortunately

As an aside (on the predatory nature of foxes), this story doesn't smell right:

Two baby twin sisters are seriously ill in hospital after being attacked by two foxes at their family home.
