taller front sight for CZ550
      #161613 - 07/06/10 10:26 AM

I'm keen to keep using the open sights on my 458WM. I have got a set of Warne QD mounts and they are fitted onto a Tasco scope - this is fine for my Trailboss loads (ie reduced) but I know normal loads wil break this scope, so I take it off. I'll get a good scope one day.

With the open sights, the lighter the projectile the higher it hits above the target, eg:

500gn projectile hits 90mm above the bead at 100yards
400gn projectile hits 240mm above the bead at 100yards (can still aim low on the target to get central hits)
300gn projectile hits 660mm above the bead at 100yards! (I have to pick a spot in the dirt below the target to get a hit on the target)

Anyone know of someone that makes a taller front sight for these rifles? (the site is fixed to the base in a loose "north-south" dovetail with a spring loaded button to stop it sliding off)

NECG export to Oz http://www.newenglandcustomgun.com/index.html?welcometonecg.html~maindeal or Recknagel (The same product).

Contact Grahame Spraggon in Tamworth for a Recknagel catalogue of sight replacement goodness. He advertises on Used Guns http://usedguns.com.au/scopes_accessories.html#gsandserv

Rule303 has just fitted a luminescent taller sight to his .416 Rigby CZ 550

I'll email him when I get home tonight. I had a look at the Recknagel website - they make some interesting stuff - you can even get an adjustable rear peepsight for a CZ550 that fits in the scope mount dovetail (not sure if it fits the magnum though - has a wider dovetail).

It most certainly does. I have one for my CZ550 416Rigby and waiting on one for the 375H&H. The aperture is wide enough for me but I have ordered 2 extra apertures so I can drill them out and get almost a ghost ring.

They mount on the rear dovetail. The peep can be adjusted for height. Go to low and the express sights cover the bottom section of your view. I had rob Bloomfield fit an optic fibre front sight-older eyes- and this is a bit low so ordered the next height up from Graeme Sparrgon

Cheers
Greg

Well the taller front sight has arrived. I had to use some 800grit wet and dry to take a bit off the base of the sight post to get it to fit but it is still taller than the previous post. This also tied in with another NECG aperture sight for the CZ550 arriving from NECG. Note. I was told on the phone by one of their employees that they do not export to Aussie. I explained that I had been told they would by email and they did. Go figure.

Now to find some time to get to the range and see where my shots are going now.
Cheers
Greg

I didn't getting around to sending my email - I was going to measure my front sight height and see if the Recknagel replacement would still be tall enough. Did your 416 Rigby or 375 shoot high? My 375 was okay with the open sights.

Yes my 416 was shooting 6 inches high at 50mts- with the fibre optic front sight I had Rob Bloomfield fit- so I wound the aperture down as low as it would go and I was still 4" high at 50mts. I have not yet had a chance to try the new taller front sight. It is on the rifle just waiting for a chance to try it.

The original fibre optic sight is 6.2mm the Recknagel one is 7.8mm.

Cheers
Greg

Went to the range today. Before shooting I raised the rear sight 2 turns=4" at 100mts from a 25" barrel and mine is a 26" barrel. The new front sight with the rear sight moved up was 1" low at 50mts and 2 at 100. 1 full turn up of the rear sight and spot on.

Cheers
Greg

I just recieved my NECG ghost ring rear sight (from Brownells). I decided to go this way rather than a taller front sight because of the adjustability. I've put it on and it should give me 200mm of correction which will almost be POA with the 400gn projys. I could file some metal off the bottom of the aperature post to allow it to screw in further - it has the thread but contacts the receiver first.

Just got another NECG ghost ring rear sight for my 375 but it shoots 420mm high at 100yards on the lowest position (whoa!!!). I'll be emailing Graeme regarding a Recknagel front sight. I figure that the front sight needs to be 3mm taller - that's quite a bit.

I also noticed that my CZ has something weird going on - the barrel looks straight enough but the rear sight has to be screwed all the way to the left and the sight alignment certainly doesn't match the line of the barrel. The front sight is more or less vertical (I thought is may have been rotated to the left too, but it isn't).

Hi Mauserand9mm,

I just looked up the Recknagel catalogue and the CZ550 front sight inserts range from 6.0, 6.5, 7.0, 7.5, 8.5,9.5 and 10.0mm's in one of their 3 designs but not all styles are in all measurements. What is the height of the current one ? it is marked on the base of the blade after removal from ramp.

Cheers,

Jeff Gray

It's the factory front sight at the moment - will this still have a height marking on it? (I'll check when I get home tonight, I have to do bore copper removal part 2 anyway). The heights of the Recknagels are measured from the bottom of the dovetail? (the link to their catalogue on their website doesn't seem to be working at the moment)

I have Graeme's response already. He's indicted (this is a partial quote) that I'll need to get an order in shortly as DHL (handle all parcel post out of Germnay) are not going to deliver guns or gun parts after 1 July and that he will not going be able to get Customs clearances for shipments after the middle of the month.

Hi Mauserand9mm,

I just tried and it's working.: http://www.recknagel.de/Joomla/

It looks like the German version of the Greens have won big time, what about all the Rifles and Scopes that come out of Germany, something doesn't seem right,

Cheers,

Jeff Gray

Thanks - that link worked.

I take it that the "Balkenkorn" is the blade style and the others are the bead style. Apart from colour, what is the difference between the white "Leuchtperlkorn" and the red or green "Lumifix-Korn"s? (are the beads different sizes?)

"Balkenkorn" is a blade
"Leuchtperlkorn" is a 2.5mm dia bead (in white only)
"Lumifix-Korn" is fibre-optic bead (in red and green)

The standard CZ550 front sight is 6.3mm tall and it does have a 11 or 1T marking on the underside, and looks to be about 1mm dia bead.

I've put in my request for a blade and a few size white beads - should resolve all issues with the 375 and let me shoot my cast in 458 with open sights (these were going much higher than the jacketed 400 and 500s).

I recieved my sights yesterday. I ended up ordering a 7.5, 8.5 and 9.5mm bead, and a 10mm blade. I had time last night to fit the 10mm blade - it required some minor filing off the bottom of the sight (as Rule303 mentioned above) and a small amount out of the front recess for the sight base retaining pluger in the sight base. I thought I'd do the 10mm first since it is larger and easier to hold when I filed it (I don't have a vice).

The 9.5mm bead will likely do the job for the 270gn projy's that I want to use. It should make the POI slightly low which I can the compensate for with the NECG rear sight adjustment. Alternatively there would be enough adjustment in the NECG to use the 10mm blade - I'll try both and see which one I prefer. I suspect that it may be the blade.

Just out of interest, with the Blade front sight do yiou use a 6O'clock hold or hold on the point you want to hit.

With a bead and peep I tend to cover the point of aim but with a blade I go to a 6 o'clock hold.

Graeme has some formular that he uses to work out what hight front sight you need. I found his findings to be out a fair margin he may well be working off a longer or shorter barrel.

I should have a couple more front sights in green here shortly. Graema is still working on a way to get Lothar Walther barrels out of Germany.

I use a 6 o'clock hold with everything but I think the intention is to use a bead as the POA. The 6 o'clock with the bead works for me because most of my shooting is at targets and the targets I use have a dark ring or dark circle that would otherwise be obscured by the bead.

I calculated the height I needed as a ratio based on the measured sight radius of my CZ, which is 730mm. So a 1mm taller front sight will give (1 / 730 x 100,000 =) 137mm height drop at 100m.

I've also now fitted the 9.5mm bead. I've decided to black out the beads (which were white) and the blade (which was silver) using a black marker pen. The light coloured sights disappear against the pale coloured targets that I use.
