Bringing home trophies
      #16144 - 24/06/04 02:51 AM

I've never been hunting in Africa, but plan to go within the next few years. The top item on the list is the cape buffalo, I also want a zebra, warthog and a few other things. Later I want to go back and try for elephant.

I have been talking to others (who have also never been to Africa) and they have mentioned that they didn't think you were allowed to bring ivory back into the United States and that they also didn't think you could bring back the big cats. Is this true? If so, what happens to your trophy?

I have been reading on hunting in Canada and North America and I know that you can't import walrus tusks, but that's the only thing I was aware of.

Thank ya'll for your help.

No it's not true is the short answer......but the longer answer is it all depends on which country you hunt in, for example Mozambique didn't apply to CITES to downlist their Elephants when they should have done. Hence, the current situation is that hunters cannot get import licences to import any Elephant products. This rule seems to me to be most strictly adhered to when importing into the USA.

Another factor is whether you hunt with a reputable outfitter who has the correct licences for you to take the animals in the first place. For Example, if you book a hunt Tanzania or Botswana for an Elephant or a Leopard, your CITES people should pre-issue you with the relevant CITES import tag, and you go from there.

I am of course assuming that you're not planning to hunt anything on the wrong list. You'll find full details on the CITES website.

Shakari,

Thank you for the information. To make sure I am understanding you correctly:

(1) As long as I hunt with a reputable outfitter, such as you, who helps me fill out the proper paperwork.

(2) and as long as I am not in a country that doesn't allow it (such as Mozambique)

I should be able to send my elephant tusks, leopard or lion skins, etc. back to the USA? I would not be willing to pay for an elephant hunt if I were unable to bring the ivory home.
