235 Gr loads for the 375H&H

does anyone have a good load for the 235Gr Speer,am trying to work up a load for a 375H&H for hog hunting as I am intending to pratice as much as possible on Hog's before I go to Africa with this rifle

Try 72 grs of IMR4064 for about 2850 fps with a 235 gr bullet in the .375 H&H Mag.

Use a starting load of about 69 grs and build up.

Don't get too carried away with the velocity with 235gn Speers!
The reason being that they come apart big time when driven fast and penetration is terrible!
I used these bullets over 20 years back in an early 602 Brno 375 mag for shooting pigs in outback Queensland and was never happy with them.

Had similar bullet break up and lack of penetration with 400gn Speers in 458 Win mag.

What are the Woodleighs like at those velocities? If you have used them. I have used some but not that many - yet.

I agree - 235 gr Speers are too frangible at these speeds.

Devastasting on roos and the like - WHEN THEY WORK - but too unreliable.

Sorry but I have no experience with Woodleighs in 375 H&H on game as I haven't owned a 375 for quite a long time.

As I've stated elsewhere I have used Woodleigh PP's in 270, 7mm and 30 cal, and they work very well giving excellant expansion and penetration.

Most of my shooting these days is with 400-350 and 470 doubles and PP's are not available in either of those calibers at this point in time.
I do wish Geoff would do some 250gn PP's in .358 as I would certainly switch over from the 250gn Hornadys that I'm using at present.
I get good results from the Hornadys at the velocity the 400-350 produces but I am sold on the weldcore design and would prefer to use that type of bullet.

I'm sure other members here can offer some details regarding Woodleigh 235 gn PP's performance at 375 H&H mag velocities though.

Back in the early 80's I took a shot at a 40 kilo pig that ran across in front of our vehicle.
The pig crossed over from right to left and continued running out to the left.
I was in the passenger seat as it was a mates Toyota swb and he was driving and his younger brother was sitting in the back.
I jumped out of the Toyota and fired a shot at the rear end of the pig which was running directly away.
You know, the ol' texas heart shot!
The Rifle was an old Brno 602 with the peep in the rear bridge, about '72 or '73 manufacture from memory.
I was using a 1.5-5 Leupold in Conetroll mounts.
The bullet was a 235gn Speer loaded up with a healthy dose of 2208.
I didn't own a chronograph back then so I don't know the velocity of the loads I was using.
So I lined up on the pigs dissapearing freckle and touched one off, at a distance of maybe 50 yards or so.
There was the boom of the rifle shot followed shortly after by this really loud POPP!!!
Then the pig started squeeling loudly and running around in wild circles trying to bite itself on the arse!
My mates younger brother was having fits of uncontrollable laughter and I'm sure he actually pissed his pants he was so far gone!
I run up to the pig and finish it off with a shot to the brain.
Young brother is still wetting his duds!
He later explained that when the bullet hit there was the big POPP sound and at the same time there was an explosion at the pigs arse end and pieces of meat flew out in all directions!
An inspection of the area indeed revealed pieces of pork and skin lying around all over the ground and the biggest bit was the size of a cigarette packet!
An examination of the pig showed that the bullet had disintergrated on impact, had penetrated less than 2 inches and had literally blown a crater on the pigs rear end the size of a small dinner plate!
Here I was, the hero in camp because I was the one with "The Big Game Rifle" and the bloody thing had just failed big time on a half grown wild pig!

Needless to say I was not at all impressed with the performance of those 235 grainers and ended up going to 270 and 300 grain Hornadys!

I was never quite sure what made the brother laugh the hardest, the sight of all that pork in orbit or the fact that my "Elephant Slayer" Brno had proven to be such a joke!

WoW I didnt think they were that explosive,guess I'll just use the 270's on pig's
I was looking for something that wouldnt give pass thru's on 200lb pig's

John I have used the .375cal 270gr Woodleigh PP on a Scrub Bull & performance was excellent. My load is 83.0gr of W760 in Win cases & WLR primer which is 1 gr above max but OK in my Sako & a friends Ruger. Shoots great which is why I have given up on the 235gr Speers, could never get them to shoot that well.



Expansion was 1.8 x Calibre & Wt retrntion was 80%. Shot was into the offside shoulder & bullet found just underneath the skin.

Got really interested in using my .375 H&H last hunting season for more than punching paper. Used it on elk with the Barnes 210gr X bullet. I'd received two elk licenses and dropped each of them with one shot. The furthest was a laser measured 302yds. Finished off two others for people who had wounded them. Each of those animals was moving, but the 210X dropped them. Try this bullet for pigs. Plenty of penetration, low recoil, and great accuracy.

Prof242 trouble with Barnes X is availability & price. Very hard to get & very expensive.
