Jaz,

Since it is no longer listed, evidently someone used the "Buy It Now" option. Was it you?

If so, congratulations!

The rifle is a "best". The seller was accomodating and a deal was done outside of the "buy it now".
The detachable lock is one of my all time favorite actions. If I could ever find a MacNaughton skeletal action in a double rifle.....

It made me very happy, thx. The rifle was made in 1910, a very good period.

Where do I apply for my finder's fee: to you, or to the seller?

If someone got that rifle cheap, I can kinda understand why. Unlike the beauty Generalwar has shown us, this one is over the top. I'm sure it cost a mint to make and decorate but the engraving is so deep and Teutonic it reminds me of the joke about the cowboy who had so many notches on his sixgun that it fell to bits.

How about publishing a nice set of pictures, now that they are removed from the auction site?

I'm amazed that you could get an accomodation from the seller. I tried once and thought I had, but it turned out to be not the case, as I was informed in no uncertain terms.

He does have some nice stuff, however. I hope to pay him a visit one of these days.

Paul,
I believe that you are looking at the rifle which now comes up on the link of the first thread. That is not the rifle. That is a sidelock, the Westley a droplock, boxlock.

As it is in Germany, it will take a bit to get the import license and have it mailed here.
I will certainly post the pictures.
The owner has another detachable lock double rifle, a 30-06 rechambered from a 30-40 Krag. In Germany re-proofing or altering does not detract from the value. I tried to explain this but sometimes one can not accept another's viewpoint. The arbitrage in our two markets does yield some nice pleasures though...:)

I believe you are looking at the sideplate .375 H&H, which now comes up when you click on the link I originally posted. For some reason, after an item is sold by this seller, he substitutes a new, unsold, item in its place.

The .470 Westley Richards Drop Lock we are discussing looks a lot like the one Capt. Curl posts with his submissions, and is definitely not a German engraved sideplate.

xausa,
Before I purchased, I called Westley in Birmingham. The rifle was not re-bored.
I do wonder what happened to the one in Holt's auction? I loved that crocodile case.

Sorry Jaz and xausa, yes I was looking at that monstrosity at the top of the thread, and now you mention it it is clearly not a boxlock let alone a droplock. Obviously I was blinded by the sheen of the gold inlays.

- Paul

Actually, it is a boxlock, albeit with side plate to provide more space for the exquisite engraving.
The text refers to it as an Anson (presumably Anson and Deeley) action, and the side plates are devoid of any pins, such as would be visible in a genuine sidelock.
