Ruger No1 577NE
      #141933 - 12/09/09 09:50 PM

Guys,
Pretty pictures of what is believed to be the first Ruger No1 in 577NE built in Australia.

If I can get the first image to work, I'll add others. Owner is a forum member and will chime in with build details.
Cheers...
Con

Con

It may or may not be the first, but it definitly won't be the last. I have No1 sitting in the safe that is earmarked for a 577NE

If you don't mind me asking, what is the barrel length and contour? I am seriously considering a .577 No.1 conversion and really like the look / balance of this one.

Hi Guys, the rifle was built for me by Bob DeVries at Kudu services here in Melbourne, it has a walther barrel that has been only very slightly contured, leaving about 5-6mm of metal around the bore at the muzzle. The barrel is 26" long was left like that to help ballance out the two mercury recoil reducers in the stock, which were added to help bring the weight of the rifle upto my goal of 13 lbs. The rifle's balance is perfect, right in front of the lever making a one hand carry possible.

Bob also hand made the sights and the barrel band from scratch, he had some sights on hand but mentioned that they would have looked terrible, and so he proportioned these ones to the monster barrel. awell as making a stronger hevier stock bolt and fitting two mercury recoil reducers I had a limbsaver pad fitted whih increased the LOP slightly due to the factory ruger stock bing about 3/4 of an inch short of perfect.

I load 750 grain bertram bullets into Bertram cases with Reloader 15 powder and dacron as a wad for 2100 fps. I was playing around with 650's but there is not a lot of difference between the two recoil wise, so I have decided to go with the hevier bullets. The recoil of the rifle is really very manageable, its not in the least brutal and is far less punishing than my .416 rigby when loaded to near .416 wby velocities with 400 grain bullets.

Cheers

Steve

Just to add to what Aussie Steve wrote,
Recoil is amazingly mild ... sure you know its gone off ... but if I had to shoot my 458AccRel (500gr at 2230fps in 10lb rifle) or this ... I'd take the No1!

I'm just dark that Ruger No1 actions/rifles are almost impossible to find at the moment! I'm keen to build one as well, but using the Varmint woodwork just to be different! And dont talk to me about mercury recoil reducers ... near impossible to source as well!
Cheers...

Hi Steve/Con,
That is a lovely rifle you have there. I have made a few big bores on the #1 action and always enjoy them. Did the builder alter the linkage at all to make the block drop a little farther to get the .577 case in, or did he cut down the top of the block?
I have a .577 NE. 3" single partly built now on a Riedl single shot action. My barrel is still at 28" and a heavy contour. I have not yet decided what the final contour or length will be. What is the final weight of your Ruger .577 with and without the mercury reducers?
Have you hunted with it yet?
That is a lovely rifle, I like the large solid sights and workhorse appearance. I have broken a few #1 butt stocks, usually the stocks that show a lot of figure, don't stand up to recoil very well. What does the recoil with the 750s feel comparable too?
I shoot a .577 3 1/4" Jeffery double of mine quite often with 650s, it weighs 11 lbs. 10oz. and is not bad to shoot, though not something I would want to shoot all day.
Beautiful rifle you have there, good taste. Congratulations!
Yukon.

That is a beauty. Maybe I should make my .375 H&H Ruger #1 into one like that. I wonder if anyone in the U.S. has made one as nice as yours. Thanks for sharing the photos.

Hi guys, the barrel is a walther, its 0.985" at the muzzle and 1.25" at the breech. The rifle weighs 10lbs 70z without the reducers, and its 12lb 7oz with them in. I have yet to shoot anything with it yet though I have taken it out for a few little trips. As for recoil, my .577 is very mild, and its probably no worse than your slightly lighter double with 650 grain bullets.

Lovely rifle.

Steve how did they alter the action to accommodate the 577NE cartridge?

Cheers, Chris

Pablo, yeah I'll be at WBB10 and I'll have the rifle and some with me. What brand are the cases, and are the loaded rounds factory or handloads?

I am not sure of any real modifications to the action other than milling the block down a fraction, to allow the rim to clear

Steve,
Have you had any problems with the spent brass catching the safety?
