.499 Hubel Express project
      #159926 - 04/05/10 11:40 AM

A long awaited package arrived today, all the way from the USA to Tasmania.....

It contains a barrel, once a .500 S&W, and a package of unprimed brass for .450 Nitro Express No. 2.

Nope, I'm not making a .450 NE #2, I'm making a .499 Hubel Express.

The barrel was very kindly sourced by a friend in America and shipped to Ed Hubel to be reamed out to the .499 HE, before being returned and shipped to me. Ed also included a die to help me resize the .450 NE #2 brass to the HUGE .499 HE.

The barrel fits my little H&R Ultra Hunter better than it's .45-120 barrel.....

Here's a close up of a .450 NE #2 in the chamber.....

and a comparison between a .45-120 shell and a .450 NE #2 shell....

It will look even bigger when it's resized to .500

and here's a comparison of my favourite cartridges....

(I have a Weatherby in .257 and a Merkel double rifle in 9.3x74R)

I currently load my .45-120 to about 4000 ft-lb with a 405gn. I plan to load the .499 HE to about 5300 ft-lb with a 525gn.

Stay tuned for updates and a range report.

I don't want to sound negative, but is the H&R up to it (The Pressure) ? I'm just asking because I've owned a few.

Also is a thumbhole stock a wise move ? I'd hate to see you dislocate a thumb.

I am interested to see how your project turns out. Why not.

The loads I tell the guys to use are with slow powders
that get 25-30,000 psi which NEF handles fine. The original
short stubby 500S&W factory loads are about 50,000
psi. We can get 5-600 fps more velocity and cases
last forever at the much lower pressures..Ed

... and a thumbhole stock is in fact a good way to hang on to a heavy recoil rifle.

Sounds good then. When do you expect to be able to put rounds down range ?

Soon....

I've resized the bottom of a few cases... I need to make some mods to some other dies (and fabricate a couple of bits and pieces) to actually make some useable cases.

I need to get some slooow powder, probably AR2217, and some suitable projectiles. I have some Hornady 500gn on order, but I really need some 525gn.... resizing some .505 Woodleighs seems to be the best way to go, but I'd really like some cast lead.... any suggestions?

I doubt I'll get to shoot it this weekend, but hopefully the weekend after.

Oh yeah, and I'd like to add a little weight to the rifle. Bring it up to maybe 9 lb or 9.5 lb.

I would have a look at .50 3-1/4" Sharps maximum loads for the Shilo rifle, for a starting load for your rifle. They should be putting a 500gr.+ bullet out of your longer case at about 2,000fps to start, so probably aren't too-far off where you want to go.

AA3100 and AA4350 are used in the Accurate Arms data. These correspond similarly to Hodgdon powders of 4831 and 4350.

What is the groove diameter? How long is the throat?
lyman makes a .510 mould which casts about 520gr. at .512" in WW alloy. RCBS also makes a .50 cal. mould that casts a 540gr. bullet in WW alloy.
Lee can make custom dies to reduce those to .502" or whatever you want. I'd order 2 of them - one at .506" and the other at .501", .502" or .503". The size should be whatever size your fired (not sized) brass will allow to be shoved in with fingers - tightly. You need to measure the ID of a fired case to see what size the cast bullet should be. This size is usually the most accurate, 9 times out of 10 as it lines up the bullet with the exact centre of the bore the best and does not start the bullet as crooked as a smaller one in a sized case - that is, if you are looking for the gun's best accuracy.

Always lube the cast bullets, ie: fill the grease grooves with lube, before reducing their diameter in a sizer. That way, they will remain undeformed. I have sized .375" cast bullets and jacketed down to .366" without any deformation at all and so have several other guys now, using multiple dies from Lee. I simply used a die I reamed.

If sizing down .510" jacketed bullets, you might want to get 3 sizes of dies between .510" and .501" or whatefver the groove diameter is. Jacketed bullets should be groove diameter or perhaps .001" undersize won't hurt.

What velocity do you expect with those 525 gr projectiles? What recoil energy etc?

That rifle looks very light.

Have fun.
