This is my 1913 Holland and Holland Takedown in 375H&H. The action is a magnum Mauser.
The case is a little sad!
My apologies for the poor photographs. I will have to take some nice ones when I get the chance.
The rifle weighs 8 1/4lbs, handles beautifully and is a delight to shoot and carry, even with the hard butt plate.
Cheers, Chris

Hi Chris,
A very nice and original Holland & Holland .375. If you ever decide to get the case remade, I suggest that you give a call to www.emmebi.it and they will make the case identical. As for the Trade Labels, if you do get the new case, I will dig out the site that possibly has them.
Cheers,
Jeff Gray

Very nice indeed. The way Holland's do the quarter ribs is unbelievable.
I had one with the other method of take down.
Re the case - I have found most look like that as they seemed to be the most used guns.
Personally, it adds character to the package IMHO.
Apart from adding some polish, they only other thing I always did was get stitching re done so it didn't get any worse and we are lucky in that we have a guy local to me who does a superb job of repairing cases.

That is a real beauty and the book it sits on a classic too. Lucky you and hope you have some fine hunting with that. I say hunting as it would be just a pleasure to carry and a bonus to shoot. Thanks for sharing it with us. A good project to restore that case.

Interesting that they made it on a Magnum Mauser.
Anyone reason why ?

Thanks for all the very positive comments. It is a lovely little rifle (funny to say that about a 375H&H) and fits like it was made for me. I would imagine it was ordered in 1912, must get the paperwork from H&H. I know who the first owner was, he lived in a castle in Britain (name and castle on the lid of the case). He had part of his right thumb (or all of it) blown off in an army accident - he was making up a sulphur for wasps in his tent, if I remember correctly, and it exploded! He eventually moved to Africa and died in Sth Africa in 1961.
The information in the case lid is interesting too, I shall post the photos, giving takedown assembly instructions, and the standard load and tropical load of MDT.
Barrel length is around 23 1/2" and it has been very professionaly hollowed in the butt for balance.
The fixed blade rear sight is sighted for 50/200yds, the folding for 350yds.
Kamilaroi (they got around the Kamilaroi didn't they!)I have asked a better authority regards the threads.
I am in no hurry regards the case, but would like some sympathetic restoration completed in the future.
Best wishes, Chris

From the photos, the threads appear to be the normal Mauser 55 degree V form threads. They are certainly not square threads, and I have never heard of buttress threads being used in a rifle receiver (except in the case of the Ross and Newton rifles, where they were used as bolt locking lugs).

Friend said 60 degree V threads, but could be 55, 2mm pitch.

500Nitro. That's a very good question. I would assume that with the exclusive agreement that Rigby had on magnum Mausers ending in 1911, couple with a new long cartridge, they may have felt it necessary? Perhaps they went with the magnum for the new cartridge as it didn't require extensive modification?
Not sure as I don't have any information with me. I'm not sure if any records of Hollands that I have seen distinguish between standard and magnum length actions by serial number. It would be interesting to ask them.
I will write to them and get their records of the rifle and ask the question re standard versus magnum length builds.
Cheers, Chris

Chris,
A most amazing treasure! No the case isn;t sad - everyone who owns the gun is sad that it (with the case of course) isn't in their gunsafe. At the same time, of course, we are very envious of you and most happy for you at the same time. Congratulations and good hunting!

Beautiful beautilful gun indeed. Holland & Holland made all their .375 magnums on magnum-mausers only up around to 1920 or 1921. The triggerguard, if one notice, is the original largebow that Mauser produced. H&H later made their own which were a little smaller and had a different profile. For me , these largebow triggerguards, witness classic Mauser from their heydays.

Beautiful rifle
Can anyone tell me when H&H started offering bolt handles like this on their 375 rifles?
