I have a beautiful Westly & Richards 500 Nitro double built in 1890. It was left in my care by a very good friend of mine from South Africa. He is interested in selling it. I have done some research online looking for a solid price for the rifle and I find nothing specific. Anyone got any idea what this beautiful rifle is worth? Thank you! Paul www.twendesafarissa.com

Can you post photos and give a good description of the bore and it would be easy to put a range value on it.
Is it a top lever, hammerless ?

Yes, I thought the same but seeing he was a first poster, I thought I'd wait until the photos were posted.

I like it, but I have no idea what it's worth, and it's too far away and I'm sure I can't afford it.
If it wasn't for that I'd buy it.
Edit: Oh yeah, and it would probably be banned in Oz soon anyway.

I gave the owner an estimate that I will put up here after others have.
I had a Holland in 500/450 - same configuration. Lovely guns.

What's the Lenord SN under the forearm?
edit; 500 Nitro, What's the milling cuts on the watertable for? My Lenord built Hollis hasn't got those. What year was this one built?

I haven't had a chance to look up the details yet as to when it was built.
Milling cuts - years ago I asked someone and was told but have forgotten. Maybe someone else on here could answer that.
What $$$$ value would you put on it ?

Westley Richards 500 Nitro field grade hammer gun.
If the bores are excellent, the wood is sound, and the gun is unaltered.
$4,000 - $6,000 est. USA auction
£1,800 - £3,000 est. London auction

I'll put a price on it from $8,500 to $9,500.00. Possibly $10,500 on the higher end. I base those figures on 3 underlever hammer-guns I have bought and sold in the past two years. One was a Army-Navy 450-400 3 1/4 NE that George sold for me. I realized $8,000.00 from the sale. It had border engraving and was spot on for condition with perfect bores. No color case but polished, very clean and great stock and checkering. A little heavy for caliber, though.
The second was a Rigby 450 3 1/4 NE that George sold for me as well. It brought me 8K if memory serves. Frosting in the bores and condition was in need of recolor-casing/barrel bluing and touching up the stock. However, It shot point of aim 1.9 to 2.3 inch groups all day with original Kynoch. Several groups touching.
Third rifle was a Rigby 450-400 3 1/4 BPE beautiful light rifle that shot 3/4 inch at 50 yards to point-of-aim and an honest 1.3 to 1.5 at 100 yards with lead 255 grainer's and 44 (if memory serves) grains of 4198. Bought it at Las Vegas for $7,500 and sold it through George for $8,000.00. Wish I had all three back again. But then I could not have taken a trip to Tanz.
So there is my 2 cents worth. Not knowing condition of the bores of twendesafaris's 500 NE and not sure if the stated date of manufacture is correct, which pre-dates the 500 NE as well as other possible condition problems not apparent through the pics.

Tweed said to me the Bores are said to be excellent.
I would have put a bit more on it than that, being a WR and a 500 Nitro.
Proof marks date the gun.

Yes I realize proof marks date a gun. That made me laugh out loud
Bore condition is speculative, what does Tweed consider to qualify excellent bores? NO frosting or pitting, bright and shiny, with sharp lands throat to muzzle?
Outside metal appears a little rough to my eye, looks like a typical working gun that saw a lot of action.
Kirby deals in a lot of these I just showed him the pictures and he felt it would bring around $5,000
I emailed the pics to Wes will see where he comes in at.

Yes, I imagine it would.
My comment was directed at Dutch44's line "re the original date of manufacture."

Based on the limited information provided, my WAG would be $7500 to $8500. That may not be market value but it's what I'd pay.
