So a friend bought a .458...
      #158493 - 08/04/10 11:22 AM

Actually 2 of them, Remington 700 Safaris in .458 Winchester Magnum. Also bought a couple boxes of ammo at $179 each. He invited me to meet him at the range sometime for some "fun", how much punishment should I expect?

I think you've already been punished by the price of the ammo - what ammo is this and how many in the box?

Over here (Australia) a box (20) of Winchester factory 510gn is $66 AUD (about $60 USD).

I weigh about 160lbs and can more or less shoot 400 grainers off a bench all day (I've only ever done 20 though). I've fired 2 x 5 shot groups off a bench using 500 grainers and they make you feel very un-loved. The 500grainers produce noticeabley more recoil. Although I do use a CZ550 and they are heavy - about 9lbs.

Off-hand I can fire all day long with any load - I gotta make sure I lean forward a little bit other wise I have to take a step backward. This is the same with my CZ550 375H&H.

.458's are fun. I have the torn cartiladge in my right shoulder to show that too much of that fun, is not much fun. Couple or three thousand rounds a year will just about do it.

I love my CZ 458. It shoots well and is easy to shoot. Go at it and have a blast - literally. Although I wouldn't be shooting too many of those factory rounds at that money.

Should have said the ammo he bought before-he said it was Grand Slam. Not sure but I think the product line is from Federal-anyway, I'm glad I'm not the one buying it. I'll happily pay him for what I shoot, but ammo prices like that are the reason my "biggest" guns are 12 gauge, .44 magnum and .30-06.

Grandslam are Speer bullets. Ammo companies use other makes of bullets, for sure. Perhaps if he knew what loading cost, he might go that route.

Hmmm - $179.00 for 20 rounds - $8.95 each.

Let's see in actual cost for components.
- $3.00 for the most expensive bullets sold here
- $0.30 for powder
- $0.05 for primer
- $1.60 per case
= $4.95 per round
Still seems high, but it adds up with the premium bullets & new brass.

Looks like reloading might be the better way to go - no case cost after the first and with range pickup, none when using short or long mag brass.

Bullets are expensive - but - that cost can be reduced to a mould and WW metal for factory duplication ballistics. Lube is cheap maybe a penny per case.

How much shooting can a person do at those costs for factory ammo?

No wonder people who shoot only factory ammo shoot so little.

bullet = $0.00
lube-- = $0.01
powder = $0.30
primer = $0.05
case-- = $0.00

total handloaded cost per round = $0.36

Yeah - that looks better.

If you aren't used to one, shoot a few rounds through it but don't over do it. Take your .30-06 along and after shooting the .458, the .30-06 will feel like a .22.

Most recoil effect is perception and going up a level makes the level below feel so much tamer.

Shoot it off hand not off a bench and the recoil felt with be far less.

Factory loaded .458 WM ammo are not too punishing if shot from standing or sitting. Just remember to hold the rifle tight, and enjoy.

Ouch!

If the rifle has a scope, you may wish to ask him to take the scope off and let you shoot it with iron sights until you are comfortable with the recoil.

He does plan to reload for this rifle, but he's like me-the first few boxes are usually factory for a "baseline" to compare against once handloading has begun. I thought the price he paqid for the ammo was a bit high myself(the last box I saw was more like $100), but thought it had actually gone that high. Either way, he got a steal on the rifles. Two rifles and two boxes of ammo were less than suggested retail for one 700 Safari, so even with high priced ammo he came out ahead.

The .458 WinMag & .458 Lott have a big push as far as recoil is concerned. The recoil is not a sharp hit like .300 WinMag or the other Weatherby Mags.

I have shot 50+ reloads using 405gr bullets with 84gr powder and my shoulder was a little sore the next bad, but nothing horrible.

On another note, factory loads are insanely priced! I can load 500gr Barnes solids at 2300fps for around $3 a round. If your friends wants some plinking loads....pick up .45-70 Govt. 405gr flat nose bullets and load'em up.

killer makes a good point. Reminton 405gr. bullets are around $55.00 now per 100. That cuts price to around $1.50 per round. Cast is still better.

Daryl_S, heck yea! I love the cast bullets I've been making with my cheapy Lee molds and their way cheaper than jacketed bullets.

I've been buying the Remmy 405gr flat nose in 500ct bulk packets for ~$130!!! $.26 per bullet!

Good Shooting!
